Child stars, swallowed up and spat out by the Hollywood machine at an early age, tend to grow up into destruction and despair. But 26-year-old former Disney voice actor Shaun Fleming – also known as Diane Coffee – is a man not afraid to veer off script in anything he does. Whether trading the sun-kissed plains of California’s Aguora Hills for the busy bustle of New York on a whim, shunning Tinsletown to craft didgeridoos for a year (“you’d be amazed at how well the didgeridoo market’s doing in this economy”) or making an album of dizzying 60s-slumming-round-the-West Coast gospel-pop, Fleming takes it in his stride. “It was a mess,” he says of ‘My Friend Fish’, recorded on pots, detuned guitars in just two weeks in his apartment fresh from his move across the country to the Big Apple. Push him a little further and he’ll tell you that’s just the way he likes it.

From the age of 6, Fleming – recently seen drumming in Foxygen – has voiced characters in Kim Possible, the Lion King and other kids’ cartoon phenomenon. “What can I say, it was an amazing time in my life,” he laughs now. “Eventually I just really started to fall in love with music and fell out of the acting thing.” One swim in the lush waters of his debut and you’ll thank the heavens he did. In fact, from the earthy Crosby Stills and Nash folk jolts of ‘Tale of a Dead Dog’ to the lo-fi husk of ‘That Stupid Girl Who Runs A Lot’, you might never want to climb out.

The album was shaped by an adolescence spent hunched over records by the Beatles. Beach Boys, Bowie and Bill Withers (“the four Bs” as Fleming calls them) as well as modern troubadours Sufjan Stevens, Feist, St. Vincent and Bon Iver. Closer to home, his relationship with Foxygen band mates Sam France and Jon Rado also played a part: “I grew up with those guys. They were writing way before I ever was. I remember thinking ‘wow, these kids are so young, I really need to get my shit together’”. Rado lends a helping hand on a couple of the tracks here. 

“I tend to write about things that give me pause in day-to-day life,” says the songwriter. He’s since left New York for the calm of Indiana but not before the metropolis could inspire one of the year’s most memorable collections of songs. “The album’s my two week odyssey. It’s a document of my new East Coast existence. I missed the quiet. I missed the being able to have a fire. I missed the colour green.”

Kraak Records is five! We celebrate our five years of 80! releases since the label was founded back in 2009. It was about time to present our first concept compilation, featuring a selection of our finest songs handpicked by label owner Angelos Timewarp Stoumpos.

With this anniversary release we present you 34 tracks, this compilation is divided into two discs that contains 17 songs on each disc. In the first disc labeled: (A Downtempo) the music will take you through a downtempo cosmos of harmonies and melodies with laid-back grooves while in the songs in the second disc labeled: (B Chill Out) will carry you around a spiritual state of mind with ambient tracks with nostalgic and mysterious melodies. The Kraak Downtempo music journey is finally here…

The Album's Concept: Everyone has a story, One story; The Monomyth. You are the main character. To understand the nature of story and what it means to us is to understand your own life path. Monomyth Separation is Part One of the Hero’s Journey. Will you accept the call to adventure? 

This album was born during my first big tour of Greece. I played 10 cities and travelled around the whole country playing my music. I received such great energy and feedback from fans that I decided I must make a project inspired by the trip, so I started digging! I collected records from around Greece; some traditional greek music plus other nice bits that I found. Whilst I was traveling, I was trying to come up with a concept that would tell the tale of a great journey. And of course, as I was in Greece ideas of myth and legend came to mind. So, when I returned home I researched a few things and stumbled across a theory by a philosopher and writer called Joseph Campbell. Basically, he wrote a book called “The hero with a thousand faces” in which he describes a theory that all great stories share; common elements - that they are all one story, a Monomyth. Is there a deeper meaning to why we tell stories? Are they a road map for our very existence, and a way to describe the cycle of life, death and rebirth? Due to this the album is very cinematic. I try to tell a story, but I want the listener to decide what that story is. The album will be best enjoyed as a whole so please find a quiet time to settle in and enjoy the ride.

The Beatles - Mini-(Z-Funkster-Boot-Ree-Leg)-Mix [2009]

"Matasuna Records" is delighted to make a musical detour to Mexico for the first time with its new release. The 7inch contains two rare Latinfunk & -Soul songs of Mexican band "Apache". The songs "Liberate" and "Hombre" were released in 1975 & 1976 and are now available on vinyl again for the first time ever. This time Matasuna companion "Voodoocuts" is back again to contribute a formidable rework of "Hombre".

Members of the band "La Fórmula ER77" formed "Apache" in the early 70s in Torreón, Mexico. The 8-piece band performed on many stages, but became known to a larger audience through an appearance on the popular Mexican TV show "Siempre en Domingo". Another success was their song "Kung Fu Chino", which was popular throughout Latin America.

In 1976, their first LP "Del Bumpin Al Hustle" was released, which contains, with one exception, only cover versions of international hits from that time. Although the originals were popular music, Apache adopted them with their own funky attitude.

At the end of the decade, the original group disbanded. Two members joined with other musicians in the early 80s to pursue a different musical direction under the new band name "Tropicalisimo Apache", which is still active today.

"Liberate" is a song composed by "Rafaél Gonzáles, who was also responsible for the production of the LP. The song is the only original composition on the album and differs stylistically from the other songs not only because of that: Liberate is a heavy Latin funk joint par excellence that leaves you wanting more!

On the flip side, you won't be disappointed: "Hombre" is another great song composed and arranged by the band's trumpet player, "Ernesto Haros". "Voodoocuts" Rework strips down the original to its instrumental base to skillfully build a new arrangement, which is enriched by additional samples, a bunch of beats and breaks and various effects. Without a doubt another tropical dancefloor treat!
