Striking a carefully crafted balance between saccharine vulnerability and sharp edged honesty both sonically and lyrically, Khiva's 'TETHERED' unapologetically showcases two sides to the same coin. Like heavy sand shifting across the bottom of the ocean, it's bold low end structure carries a story through perilous depths to reach a weightless place among the current, where a crooning melody offers a breath, a sense of closure, to an otherwise melancholic tale. Bookended by her increasingly known use of dark wit and allegorical rhyme, 'TETHERED' is a grateful nod to the dual nature of all things, and as always, the sound system.

Killa P makes his return to the label for the first time in over a year. This one hitting a significant milestone of release number ten for the former Roll Deep MC, five years after the label arm was birthed in 2017 with him featuring on the very first release. Seemingly saving his best work to date to celebrate the occasion, with a hard hitting, drill infused, melodic record that sits somewhere between the realms of Grime and Dubstep. Produced by now, Label Manager - Hayz, after working closely with the label and events for the past four years with multiple releases along the way. This time around joining forces with last year's unearthed gem, Josef.

A world renowned MC and pioneer in the Grime & Dubstep world. Killa P’s acclaimed for his unique patois style and hard lyrics. Killa became known as one of the UK’s prolific MCs while he was a member of one of the UK’s founding grime crews, Roll Deep. His style and flow led to commercial success and earned him a new generation of fans through his 2008 collaboration with The Bug on the seminal track ‘SKENG’. Fast forward a few years to 2016 where he released the biggest track of the year and arguably the last decade with Sir Spyro, Teddy Bruckshot & Lady Chann on Deep Medi. He had his first release with 1Forty in 2017 and has since has gone on to collaborate with the likes of an array of names across the label fluttering around the full umbrella of genres, with Filthy Gears, NothingNice, Fork And Knife, 9TRANE, Kobe JT and Palizé.

Whilst Leeds has had a Grime scene that has been quietly bubbling away for a few years on the MC front, there have been very few 140 producers who come through. Hayz was hellbent on changing that since landing on the 1Forty radar and has established that since his label debut with ‘Hightop’ in September 2019 and the VIP that followed. His debut EP landed on Rapture 4D’s critically acclaimed Plasma Abuse label in 2020, before leading on to what some named as a contender for EP of the year alongside NothingNice and Logan, with the London City Warlord Riko Dan on the lead track, which released on Durkle Disco in February 2021. His most recent was his biggest release to date at the end of the year producing Armour & Roachees ‘Link With Dem’.

Josef has been producing for a few years while he’s been studying at university in Leeds. The young versatile producer from Cheltenham had only self released prior to us picking him up in 2021. His first ever release was alongside Paige Eliza, some of whom may now know for her releases alongside Sammy Virji and more recently Flava D on Hospital Records as she continues to elevate through the underground, whilst also producing and selling beats to some of the UK’s breakthrough Drill & Rap artists. Josef released Shining with us in 2021 followed by the VIP on 5 Years Of 1Forty this Summer making this the third time releasing on 1Forty and his first vocal project on the label.

Mental health is something that lingers in the forefront of many members of this community, who struggle themselves with it & have close friends that do as well. Denver-based producer A Hundred Drums demonstrates her wide array of instrumental talents and genre diversity on her self-titled album, available this Valentine’s Day on Gravitas Recordings. Sitting comfortably at seven tracks, this album is Gabrielle Watson’s most ambitious project to date.

Detouring from the deep dubstep sounds that first made a splash in the scene, Watson uses A Hundred Drums to create her own sound and break away from familiarity by showcasing her vast musical influences.

The Valentine’s Day release date and self-titled album is a symbol of what A Hundred Drums intends to accomplish: “A Hundred” was chosen for its spiritual and societal primacy, and "Drums" call our hearts to beat in sync. A Hundred Drums aspires to align all listeners' heartbeats to her BPM, unifying us all in the music. We beat with one collective heart on the day celebrating love.

A tribute to her passion project, “Shakti Sound” sets listeners on a globetrotting journey into mysterious and minimalistic 808s. A Hundred Drums puts a spotlight on her signature hand drums in "Circles," which blend in an abstract, downtempo experimental soundscape before James Xavier sings of a wicked flame. Dashing down the dark road, A Hundred Drums tells the haunted tale of the “Boogie Man,” slicing through inky blackness with an eerie bassline and haunting whispers.

“Psy.Area” incorporates cascading psytrance as liquid bass is gradually dripped onto the track. Featuring A Hundred Drums’s first official collaboration with fellow Denver artist, Templo, “Apex” rides the wave through a cave of deep dub and metallic beats. Vibe Emissions “Circles” back to offer an energizing remix of the aforementioned song, incorporating various deep dubstep rhythms and textures. Legendary producer Leon Switch remixes “Lord of Tings,” released originally by Heavy Traffic Recordings and featuring Jayne Gray, into a seductive stupor, closing out A Hundred Drums's self-titled album in a state of bliss.

'Clouds’ sees one of the most unlikely link ups to date on the label, but with the unexpected in music usually comes a rich vein of originality and this outcome is no different. Putting one of the labels most decorated Grime artists Lyrical Strally (YGG) alongside one of bass music’s best female vocalists Dakota Sixx is intriguing alone. Then adding not just a producer but technically gifted musician Higgo on the buttons and the end result leaves another sun soaked, yet much more soulful track with the piano lead, punchy metaphors and chorus wrapping up a culminating end product.

Lyrical Strally first featured on the label back in 2018 with ‘Grime Street’ as the lead track on 1FGRM003, a track that went on to be premiered by Complex UK, visuals that landed via SB:TV, and although it was released at the very end of the year before, was featured in Sir Spyro’s ‘Best Of Grime 2019’ on his 1Xtra show. Throughout 2019 the relationship between artists and label was ever present from the release as well as Travis being part of the 1Forty Takeover on BBC Radio 1 w/ Toddla T. Lyrical Strally went on to join the bill at the 1Forty Manchester Launch in March alongside fellow YGG members PK and DJ Travis T as well as an appearance on Marcus Nasty’s Rinse show that summer. Some six months later another beat from Jhuttz landed in the 1Forty mailbox with a sound of grime very much fitting for a YGG revival after two years since their last release ‘Strikers’ on Astral Black, paving the way for ‘Royals’.

Pairing up with Lyrical Strally on the vocal is female songwriter and vocalist Dakota Sixx who first began gaining popularity from her debut EP ‘Innocence’ which received support across BBC 1Xtra, Nest HQ & Mixmag. Since the success of her first project, Dakota has released music through labels such as 877 Records and Saucy with said releases gathering support from key tastemakers such as DJ Q & Jamz Supernova. After relocating to London from Birmingham almost five years ago she has performed at the likes of Fabric, recorded her most recent EP at world famous Abbey Road Studios and in 2019 became an ambassador for Converse where she featured on multiple campaigns. Dakota has also featured on tracks alongside Capo Lee and Star One.

The third and final name part of this collaboration is Higgo. Having taken the UK Garage and Bass scene by storm, blending UKG sensibilities with his passion for old school hip hop and the raw bass focused attributes of the current sound of UK underground music, Higgo has quickly seen his music pick up support from A-list names like Todd Edwards. In 2019 he was seen as one of the key players out of the names coming through in UKG as he was enlisted for Conducta’s Redbull Roadblock project around the UK. Furthering on from his debut 1Forty release ‘Soul 2 Soul’, his Wang Records releases as well as his own highly successful self releases have helped cement his status beyond an upcoming artist in 2020.
