All State Honors Choir 2018

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire Concert Choir

Upon hearing, within four weeks of one another, that my young cousin was diagnosed with leukemia, my great uncle's cancer had returned and that my Godfather had been given seven to eight months left to live (as a result of an extremely aggresive form of cancer), I did not know where to turn. With one being in his thirties, another in his sixties and the other being one of the most physically active individuals I know, I had no idea what to expect when it came to the question of, “who could be next?” When things appear to be so dark that one has a known time limit on his or her own life, where does an individual turn to for help? 
After hearing the text of Psalm 121 I knew my personal answer. “I will lift mine eyes up to the hills. From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” No matter what one believes, whether that is a divine force or simply luck, there is always hope. One should not waste their time looking at a situation with the end in mind, because the end could be further than expected. Rather, choose to embrace each moment that life presents to you, whether that is joyful or painful, and live within each day as if it is your last. In the end we all have a time limit, so what will you do to take advantage of this blessing called life?

II. I Will Lift My Eyes

Special thank you to the Oshkosh West High School Chorale under the direction of Herb Berendsen.  

Never did I think a piece of music could have a heartbeat of its own, until I created this composition. I have always been a fan of epic cinematic music, and it has always been goals of mine to one day write such a work. When Herb Berendsen, conductor of the Oshkosh West High School Chorale, contacted me to write a piece about an animal, I knew that this was my opportunity to fulfill that dream.

Immediately I went on a hunt for the perfect text and came across the poem, The Tyger, written by William Blake. After reading this text, my mind went to the deepest and darkest pits of middle earth. Instantly, sounds of forging steel, chains, fire and percussion began to flood my mind as I conceived the thought of this animal being forged. After this, imagery of the dark, damp and dreary location that this animal was created entered my imagination. One exciting concept led to the next, and before I knew it, the tyger had come to life through my music.

Although I know this composition is not really a living and breathing entity, it is hard to believe that such an animal does exist. Where could a creature with such strength, elegance and poise come from? Who could conceive such a thought as the tyger? “Did he who made the lamb make thee?”

So, I have to explain few things. I'm not the artist or the composer of this piece of music, and unfortunately idk the artist neither.
I uploaded this music when my Grandma passed away, she was my favorite person in Earth, I loved her more than I loved anyone in my life and I don't think that I'll love anyone the same as her. May she rest in peace.

"I’ve really got off on working on compilations lately. It’s such a wonderful way to delve deep into your music collection. My flat is now crammed with music media of all stripes, from an old hand-cranked 78 phonograph player to 45s and albums on vinyl, my beloved old cassette tape collection, even mini-disks and, lately, WAV and MP3s. It’s all music to me. After spending hours recording from all of these diverse sources, I started to play around with the tunes, layering them, sampling, looping certain parts, extracting phrases and using all the freedom that this allowed me. If I got a little carried away or stepped on anyone’s toes in my quest to do something interesting and original, then I apologise. Some things may have accidentally landed on the wrong speed, while other spooky happening have occurred along the way, whether it’s ghostly additions of reverb and delay or simply subtle edits or reproductions, they've all gone into the magical stew I've tried to create for your pleasure and edification. I can’t tell you how much fun I've had creating this compilation for you but, suffice to say, I hope it will be a nice journey for your mind and heart."

Iter Itineris

Zachary J. Moore (b. 1992) is an American composer and arranger, and recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with a Bachelors degree in Music Education. Zach, who is a native resident of Wisconsin, attended Muskego High School and began composing in 2009 at the age of fifteen. Since then, he has had the opportunity to take master classes and guidance from some of the world’s leading choral composers including Eric Barnum, Dan Forrest, Ola Gjeilo, Ethan Wickman, Timothy Takach and Jake Runestad.

From 2013 to the present, Zach has received an increasing amount of commissions from both choral and instrumental ensembles all over the world. In 2014 the North Central American Choral Directors Association commissioned him for their project, “A Community That Sings.” More recently, he was commissioned by the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Wind Ensemble to write his first ever instrumental work, In Memoriam, for their 2016 performance at the CBDNA North Central Regional Conference. In addition to his numerous domestic commissions, Zach has also received two international commissions as well, the most recent being for the Cheong Gong High School Male Choir, winners of the 2013 International Busan Choral Competition. Currently, Zach is serving as the 2014-2016 composer-in-residence to The Eau Claire Master Singers. The residency has been comprised of five new commissions, one being The Fall of Rome, commissioned for the Franklin D. Roosevelt 75th Anniversary Concert being held in Washington D.C., 2016.

Aside from commissions, Zach’s compositions have received prestigious performances at state conventions, including Music Educator Association Conventions (Nebraska -2014 and Florida – 2015), Florida American Choral Director’s Association Conference (2015), and the North Central Choral Director’s Association Regional Conference (2014). Internationally, Zach’s works have been performed in Africa, Europe, North America and Asia, with the most recent notable performance being by the Taipei Youth Choir (2015) at the Taipei National Concert Hall.    

Throughout Zach’s career as a composer, he has received distinguished awards for his compositions. In 2010 his first composition received third place in the Wisconsin Student Music Association’s Student Composition Project. More recently, in 2014, he submitted an entry to the renowned American Prize national competition, earning third place as well.
