Travelling the world from NZ to UK and reflecting on his experiences, Cern releases his second album “Under Another Sky” on Dispatch Recordings. Captaining an enthralling quest into his creative sphere, this project encapsulates a wide breadth of influences, delivering an all-rounded album that is both diverse and quality in substance.

Cern exercises total freedom across tempos and genres to map out a complex blueprint of his own fictional world; welcoming you to drift off into its atmosphere. As the novel unwinds, “Under Another Sky” delves deep into the senses with seamless transitions; from the progressive amen curiosity of “Infinite Exchanges” through to the off-kilter, abstract forays of “Human Dynamics” and serene instrumentals of “Blumei”.

The LP features a 15 track digital album, hand-picked and arranged to enhance the listening experience, rather than catering or targeting to dancefloor crowds. Vast soundscapes and solo instrumental pieces assimilate with sub-bass pressure to complete an all-encompassing listening experience from start to finish.

Amongst his own solo ventures, guest artist collaborators join Cern to explore the full spectrum of the D&B edge. Rolling early on with DLR for groove ridden “Patterns” and later met by the emotive depth of “Those Left Behind” with Hydro, his darker side accumulates throughout the album, as rugged link ups with Loxy, Gremlinz and Overlook cause untold low end damage.

Experimenting with both orchestral and amen elements to contrasting effect, Cern offers a temporary retreat from reality to take you “Under Another Sky”.

After ED:IT and Pennygiles killer collab ʻSet Theoryʼ did serious dance floor damage back in 2014 - and with the Ulterior Motive remix still ringing in everyoneʼs ears – it was a certainty he had to grace the label again. And heʼs stepped up with two killer cuts, this time showing the deeper side of his armoury.

ʻIf And Only Ifʼ opens with glorious piano chords and a haunting vocal signalling something deep. Yet it drops heavily with a seriously weighty sub and fizzing reese bass layered over the top. The piece still maintains its deeper side though, and is a glorious melding of vibes, making it a track that a whole range of DJs will want to reach for.

Nearing on two years since his last outing with Proximity, Tom Small returns, bringing with him only fire. Known for his hard rollers, Tom Small shows us what he knows best offering some of the finest in Drum & Bass. With support from some of the most respected producers and selectors in the game: Amoss, Bredren, RoyGreen & Protone, Rido, and Fre4knc to name a few on an increasingly growing list.
Black Angel starts us off in style; a nice little shadowy roller that’s sure to get a killer reaction. This is one for any arsenal with excellent manipulation of low end and truly cross spectrum sound. Track number two moves us into the eerie, further into the recesses of sound. Again keeping up the pace, with Falling Walls Tom Small harmonises thick hard hitting bass with wobble in a completely unique way. The power dynamic between the two is a joy to listen to, each one battling out for dominance of the track. 
Raucous toms lead the sound in Future Time, in addition to unimaginable mid range noises, all before we reach the drop. The title track has certainly earned its spot and doesn’t fail to deliver the epitome of energy. The highlight however is as the tune lets up in the middle and teases that rumbling bass stripped back of all but a few futuristic squelches before serving up its hard sound once more.
Detailed ends the EP in style, bringing with it all you would expect. With an experimental drum pattern that still hits all the right groove chords, all you can do is rock out. A fitting end to an outstanding display; this one’s a keeper.

Phil Tangent - Bardarbunga

Drum & Bass has always been an interesting phenomenon in Poland. Although not often attributed as being one of its primary bases in Europe, it’s produced some of the most exciting talent to come forward across the scene. And one of these artists is 20 years old 174bpm stalwart Adrian Rybka, who also goes by his pseudonym Satl. Having had regular support from the likes of heavyweight DJs Fabio & Grooverider, Friction, LTJ Bukem, Artifical Intelligence and DJ Marky, he’s become a staple on the European club circuit.

Having already had releases on the likes of Innerground, SGN:LTD, Integral and more, ‘From Time’ sees him move onto the Soul Trader imprint. Alongside collaborator Harland, his first offering ‘Alone’ takes you into sub-terranean levels, moving away from any of the more commercial sounds which have littered drum & bass and instead provides an intimidating soundscape. If this track is anything to go by, neither Satl nor Harland are prepared to wind down their production standard and instead go in all guns blazing, with smashing kick and a sub bass that ricochets from start to finish.
