Surfacing around the mid-2010s, WAVE emerged as a style of Electronic music heavily influenced by 2010s Hip Hop production, characterized by dark, icy, nocturnal, and melancholic beats. Wave blends Cloud Rap's hazy and dreamy atmospheres with darker and more sinister ambiance, sometimes resembling Witch House, and with rhythms borrowed from Trap and influenced to varying degrees by Dubstep, Grime, Future Garage and UK Bass, and is more intense, moving and hard-hitting than earlier cloud rap as a result of that. Drum programming influenced by genres such as Footwork or Chicago Drill is sometimes incorporated, as well as prominent sub-basses and basslines comparable to those of dubstep or Trap [EDM]. Cloud rap artists like Clams Casino and Yung Lean's producers Whitearmor and Gud played a particularly important role in wave's creation, having been credited as primary influences for many early wave producers. Some producers also incorporate prominent, melodic synth leads (often supersaws or sawtooth waves) that are sometimes made loud and distorted, in addition to reverberated synth pads that often resemble those found in future garage. Heavily processed vocal samples and dense sci-fi soundscapes are also common. Though the genre is almost always instrumental, a number of producers have collaborated with rap artists, further extending wave's reach and influence.

Wave was mostly and initially popularized by collective wavemob, which was established by wave pioneer Klimeks, who coined the name of the genre to describe his own music. Wave was birthed in London and producers and DJs of the city, like the aforementioned Klimeks and wavemob associates Kareful and Skit were predominant in the genre in its first years. Another London artist who greatly contributed to the emergence of the genre is Plastician, who made a highly influential mix that would help bring attention to the genre, titled The Wave Pool MMXV. Plastician would continue to make similar mixes in upcoming years, in addition to featuring up-and-coming artists of the genre on his record label. Due to its rapid growth and underground popularity in online scenes, and especially Soundcloud, YouTube, and Bandcamp, the genre spread to many other locations, especially in the US and Canada. This later led to some producers like Edmonton's Sorsari, New York's Noah B and Nottingham's Glacci becoming some of the most popular wave artists. Independent online labels such as wavemob, Plastician's Terrorhythm Recordings, Liquid Ritual and Yusoul Records became central hubs for wave music during the late 2010s. Like other internet-era genres such as Vaporwave, wave's aesthetics often include distorted, surreal graphics, futuristic, psychedelic landscapes and escapism as well as disemvoweled or intentionally misspelled artist names and fully uppercased or lowercased aliases.
