I instantly wanted to do something with probabilities. So here are a lot of probabilities at work, thanks to Ableton: The pad (23 notes of A minor scale, with a 23% probability of being played an octave higher) and the gongs have a 23% probability of not to be played inside 1 bar with 1 note in a loop of 23 bars. The cymbal has a 23% probability of being played and, if played, a 23% probability of being a rainstick. The voices saying 'The Probability Is 23 Percent' are made with ttsmp3.com and I downloaded 23 different versions which had a switch probability of 23% (so not all of them may have been played; the 'stutter effect' is by accident, I did not found the cause and liked it anyway). And so on, with 23 bpm. I wanted to do 23 Minutes but to honor the "squared" prompt (and to spare you some repetition) it's only 529 seconds (8:49min). Be assured that, although I was a huge fan of The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Wilson/Shea and it may sound otherwise here, I didn't take all that too seriously…

Minimally Viable Music - disquiet0530

Minimal Peace  (disquiet0530)

Decided to keep this weeks Junto simple, so I recorded three instances of switching on / off 
First sound to be heard is my ceiling fan
2nd. is my electric kettle 
3rd. is the on off switch on my electric piano 
Duplicated each sound onto two different tracks panned each hard L & R timestreched one side of each "stereo" image slightly to create a phase shift kinda beat...then I thought of Mandela and wanted to create an uprising towards the end, so I duplicated everything a couple of times and displaced the new tracks a little more with long fades....to let the whole thing end with just two beats - it all falls back to the beginning... coming and going on your own.

For each of the switches, record several seconds of this on/off action so you can create loops of a steady pace. Then create an original piece of music that employs phase shifts — that is, in which the tiny distinctions between loops create noticeable patterning as time progresses. You can use some light processing, but the sense of "switch-ness" of the source audio should never be lost.

Deadline: Monday, December 9, 2013, at 11:59pm wherever you are.

LINEAR BELLS - Disquiet0101-Analogbinary - HiFi Furry

The three sounds are ones I had recorded a few years ago at a bakery I was making bread at. One is a Vitamix blender, the other is a 30qt mixer, and the last one I can't remember. 
I only added a little effect to the vitamix: Bode Frequency Shift. 
The others I left raw. In the spirit of this assignment, I used fade in fade out, through out the piece.

Life/Death Machine (disquiet0101-analogbinary)

I left work early as I have a ton of personal time to take before the end of the year and then I recorded my light switches with a Zoom H2 recorder. After importing the recordings I built a small dub send/return network to apply lightly. The deep droning sounds are created through micro loops one of the more interesting switches in my new apartment is the one that controls the garbage disposal after introducing the garbage disposal loop I began micro looping it to create a granular sounding pad and then towards the end layered several of them all in different spans of time off the original loop.

Recorded three sounds as directed: A microwave, a kitchen sink (not strictly a "switch" but it does go on and off), and a small battery-powered hand drill.

In Ableton Live, loaded the sounds and made a few permutations of each, both in length and pitch.  They are brought into and out of the piece throughout.

An entry to the 101st disquiet junto weekly project  where contributors are given 4 days to create a short piece based on a unique set of rules, or guidelines. This week was to record the on/ off switching of household objects and play not-quite-synchronised  loops of these recording. Allowing phase loops to occur over the extended playback .
To the timing of a metronome , (which can just be heard in the background) I switched on and off the following:
1.Drill 
2.Massager 
3. Hex bug
4. Dry switches on broken noise generator.(pictured)
Recorded on Minidisc sony mic. Some eq ,some revb, on the drill I used some light amp o/drive for warming up the sound.On the clicking switches a short delay. Maxim on whole mix. I just re-read the instructions and I should have only have used 3. No paul stretch this week- well you can have too much of a good thing I suppose.

Switching Motors [disquiet 0101-analogbinary]

Recorded 31 May 2014, mixed & mastered June 02 2022 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa.

This is a cover version of a song by Van Morrison.  ©1968 Van Morrison.  

I am looking for input on my mixing and mastering here.  Is the master too hot?  Is there enough clarity between the parts?  Do the vocals and lead guitar shine through in the mix? Is the cymbal too loud (I quite like it during the guitar solo and during the mellotron/loud parts)? Honestly, details other than "good" or "bad" for the mix or master will always be welcome.  However, I am not soliciting any comments on my performances here instrumentally or vocally.  I have enough critics of that kind living in my head, thank you.  I also have no intention of adding or removing or re-recording any of the parts here.  

What I am currently working on is a remix project whilst simultaneously learning some iZotope plugins.  The material is a covers EP I completed/released first in 2014.  This followed a serious hospital stay and in my mind represented a "stripped-down" approach similar to my cassette 4-track work in the 90s - guitar, bass, drum sounds, vocals, basic keys - and as opposed to my "kitchen sink" approach in the 00s with songs that had 50-100 tracks each at times.   This particular cover is Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" and is dedicated to Lester Bangs and his horrific experience related to this song and album by Van, as understood by my reading of the book "Let It Blurt" by Jim Derogatis.  Lester had a sort of subconscious reach into my life as in high school I was an avid Creem reader of the period slightly before and after his death.  His shadow was all over that magazine at that time.  

Process notes - 
On this track I played a Jay Turser Mustang-inspired guitar, an Epi EB-0 bass, an M-Audio Trigger Finger (triggering some jazz-type Ableton Live drum rack), a cheap cymbal (same one from the 90s) and two tracks of GForce M-Tron string and flute sounds.  My arrangement in this 31 May 2014 version subs in a plunky angular lead guitar for the vocal ad-libs that Van originally gave us and what I tried to do with no success when I almost gave up on the project in Jan 2014. I also opted for a shorter track length than either Van's version or much of the "kitchen sink" work I was doing in the 00s.  

The plugins used were Nectar 3 Plus, Neutron 3 Advanced/Visual Mixer (and now 4), and Ozone 9 Advanced.  In a limited way, these plugins AI "assisted" me in my mix levels, my mastering treatments and my instrument and vocal effects.  I used a hybrid approach where I did not give the iZotope plugins my naked tracks but rather used most of the channel "racks" (strips) set up in 2014, originally in Ableton Live 9 32-bit and remixed here in Live 11 64-bit.  Nor did I use the Visual Mixer for panning.  Subjectively speaking, for the past year or so, my mastering has improved with the help of iZotope's Elements plugins, so I recently went and upgraded.  I then committed to learning some new tricks for these old ears.  I also tweaked some things that I felt the AI missed, but did not dwell on almost anything here for more than a minute or two.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)
