Francesco Cilea’s opera Adriana Lecouvreur, with a libretto by Arturo Colautti, was composed between 1899 and 1902, drawing from the eponymous drama by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé. The work recounts the life of the historical figure Adrienne Lecouvreur, a Comédie-Française actress, and her rumored poisoning, linked to her affair with the Count of Saxony, betrothed to the Princess of Bouillon, her suspected murderer. Commissioned by Sonzogno, the opera premiered on November 6, 1902, at Milan’s Teatro Lirico, achieving resounding success and cementing Cilea’s status as a leading figure in Italian Verismo.
The opera’s intermezzo weaves themes from its four acts, adhering to classical opera conventions. Its orchestration is deliberately sparse, typically using strings and select woodwinds, offering performers and audiences a brief respite. In this wind ensemble adaptation, the intermezzo transcends its operatic origins, reimagined as a standalone symphonic work. The enriched instrumentation emphasizes contrapuntal interplay, highlighting individual voices within the wind orchestra. This transcription showcases the ensemble’s potential, challenging the historical undervaluation of such groups. By revitalizing this rarely performed opera, the arrangement promotes a renewed appreciation of its legacy.

Tempo: Stretto (which is fast, calculated movement like in the first and risoluto part), and Lento (here depicted with hints of rubato all over, marked by constant pauses) in short need a stern virtuoso player that knows the piece well.

The Spruce (Le Sapin in French, Granen in Swedish) is the fifth and final piece in Jean Sibelius’s Five Pieces for Piano, Op. 75, composed in 1914. These pieces, collectively known as The Trees, reflect Sibelius’s deep connection to the Finnish landscape and his affinity for nature as a source of artistic inspiration. While much of Sibelius’s fame is anchored in his large-scale orchestral works, The Spruce demonstrates his sensitivity and refinement in writing for solo piano. It features a gently flowing melodic line with subtle harmonic shifts, evoking the quiet dignity and natural grace of the evergreen tree. The piece has become one of the most frequently performed piano miniatures by Sibelius, celebrated for its lyrical charm and intimate character.

Although The Spruce is relatively simple in structure, its expressive nuance and atmospheric quality are hallmarks of Sibelius’s late-Romantic style. The piece opens with a gentle, rocking motif in the left hand that sets a calm, almost meditative tone, over which the right-hand melody unfolds with understated lyricism. Sibelius’s use of shifting tonal colors and dynamics contributes to a sense of organic growth, echoing the imagery of a tree slowly swaying in the Nordic wind. This piece, like the others in The Trees set, reveals the composer’s ability to capture emotional depth and natural beauty in a compact musical form, making it a valuable addition to the piano repertoire.
