My last birthday wish
I asked to be ignored
But granting me this
The world could not afford
It had to be firing off rockets
Singing a children’s song off key

Pretending he’s having fun 
If he feels it he laughs
If not he asks
Would it bother anyone 
If a man of my years should run and hide
While a shred of pride remains 

A slice of cake I’ll handle
Please don’t light that candle
My age in the icing
Is that meant to be a nice thing?
You tell me to blow now
But I will not
I have got to go now

I’ll make no promises
You’ll say I just did
But that’s not what this is
I’m merely aware of my standing

There’s kids on the lawn
I could shout at them
Instead I just yawn and repeat

A man of my years sits back
with a cold drink and salty snack
His work is long done
He’s had enough fun
Now he wants to relax
After laughter and tears
All the hurrahs and jeers

Seen in the sunlight:
A desolate field

Takahama Kyoshi was a Japanese poet active during the Shōwa period of Japan. He was the editor of the haiku magazine Hototogisu (previously edited by Shiki), where he promoted a more traditional style of haiku, as opposed to other popular schools which did not follow the pattern of seventeen syllables at that time.

Kyoshi also highlighted the symbolic function of the kigo (the seasonal reference), even though the more modern trends were already tending towards seasonless haiku.
