Experimental symphony

A live recording of the premiere of "asleep, forest, melody, path" for field recordings and live performance (2013), written for Greg Stuart. The field recordings were made in the Congaree National Park in 2012 and 2013. Greg assembled an ensemble of 30 local musicians for the concert, which took place on November 18, 2013, at the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina.

φάτις, in Greek, refers to "speech" and to "language". The term is also associated to "word" and "rumor" and refers also to the "word that comes from heaven" in the oracle. Both in the compositional writing for the acoustical instrument and in the mechanisms of the electronics, the piece draws on vocal materials, on images and connotations evoked by the term φάτις, and on references to my previous works, impedance (2010) and fragmentos sobre o sol (2012), as models, materials, processes and space of gestural and sonic investigation to explore the transductive process of sound production and transformation that happens along the phonetic/respiratory system of the instrumentalist, the flute, the live-electronics processes and the sound projection in the acoustic space. 
The piece is dedicated to flutist Cássia Carrascoza.

Yesterday I shall came in silk thorns

Surrounded by handmade instruments, French folk singer, harpist, spinet and hurdy-gurdy player Emmanuelle Parrennin delivered an entrancing solo set to a winter crowd. Stripped of some of the more electronic, psychedelic tones that appeared on Maison Rose and Pérélandra, Parrennin creates an unearthly atmostphere with her vocals and a wired approach to instrumentation. Though in the past Parrennin has collected songs around rural France in a similar manner to the work carried out by Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins, this isn't simply revival folk; there's a tinge of a strange future to every song.
