“$1.7 Billion Lie” was inspired by a Center for American Progress analysis of Trump’s National Guard deployments into American cities. According to their research, the deployments had no measurable effect on violent crime, homicides, or gun violence, while potentially costing taxpayers more than $1.7 billion. Even more striking to me was that crime had already been falling before the deployments began.

That’s what made me want to write this song. It’s about what happens when political theater becomes more important than evidence, when fear is used to justify an enormous expense, and when someone tries to take credit for numbers that were already moving in the right direction. And when the data challenged the story being told, Trump attacked the researchers behind it.

For me, this song comes down to one simple idea: facts don’t belong to whoever holds the most power. You can attack the numbers, attack the people who studied them, and repeat a story as loudly as you want, but you still can’t force the evidence to agree with you. And if taxpayers are being asked to spend $1.7 billion, I think we have every right to ask one very simple question: What did it actually buy?
