A force in the deep house scene since its first foot forward in 1999, Yoruba Records is overseen by the much loved and highly respected artist and producer, Osunlade. Consistently delivering a diverse range of glorious beats that span deep house, to soulful jazz, and hip hop. Although dance has been at its centre, Yoruba has experimented with a diverse array of electronica, evolving and growing with the times. From its humble beginnings, the label’s spiritual connection has been at the heart of everything it does, guided by the energies and vibrations that allow passion to create honest music that truly reflects the soul. Yoruba continues to push boundaries, and now with over 300 records in the bag, it is one of the worlds most important dance labels of our era.

Here label head Osunlade returns with his first release of 2022. ‘Black Woman Cry’ is the lead single from his forthcoming album ‘Spectrum’. With full intention to be a deep in the night club banger, ‘Black Woman Cry’ delivers some serious heat on the beats. Pulsating stabs form the mesmerizing atmosphere while the haunting sounds of women’s screams serve as a timely reflection of the worlds pain right now. B Side, ‘Brand New Hope’ is a happier and more hopeful affair where vocal samples shape the ear pleasing, rolling, deep house groove.

‘Spectrum’ is probably the most electronic Osunlade project to date, created in 2019 during the first lockdown, held back until now. This forthcoming album will deliver something for every house genre, meanwhile, we hope you enjoy this introduction to the full length affair, ‘Black Woman Cry’.

It’s a long time since we last heard from dOP. The boys have been far from quiet, continuing to tour and enchant party people across the world with their infectious fusion of house music and refined songwriting. They’ve equally been no strangers to the studio, with their Les Fils Du Calvaire project releasing the recent Rester Avec Toi collaboration with Miss Kittin in preparation for the debut album of the project later this year. Equally their production talents have been felt in the recent Aquarius Heaven EP Bato Chargé, and vocalist JAW was recently spotted kicking off the Circus Company Limited series with “Traitor Creator”, his collaboration with Piers Faccini. Finally though the time has come for dOP to return to the record in their original form with a new four track EP that perfectly captures where the trio of Damien, Clement and JAW are at right now. 

The sound on Email From A Beetle is a full-fat, club ready confection that distills the live energy of dOP into four varied but equally ear-snagging tracks that simply demand your attention. The title track in some ways harks back to the introspection of their earlier material, keeping the rhythmic elements sparse and simmering to lend ample space to JAW’s captivating vocal line, but there’s still plenty of space for Damien’s expressive keys to cut through as the song peaks. 

“Melancholia” is, as the name suggests, a more reflective piece with a gentle swing and emotive melodic lines, but there’s plenty more fun times to be had as well as the infectious house bump of “Foreplay” takes hold with a hard-skipping beat and rock solid bass line. If there was any doubt that warm, rounded analogue sounds power dOP these days, “Summer Rain” is on hand with its shocking stabs of dazzling synth capturing a feverish mood that calls out to the impending sunny months of the year. 

Always a group committed to moving forward with their sound, this EP serves as an exciting next step for dOP while retaining the compositional flair and addictive energy that has kept them close to our hearts all these years.

Electronic music has always been filled with innovative individuals, but even among such company, Dean Zepherin is a producer who has managed to find his lane and appeal.  Born and raised in London, a suitably eclectic city for a man of his musical persuasion he is renowned for his consistently genre-pushing productions, having also spent time in Berlin, it became another city that’s left its mark on his always-captivating sound.
To fully appreciate and understand Zepherin’s approach, it’s necessary to go back to his roots in Harrow, London as it was here where he first encountered soul, funk and jazz fusion records. From an early age he was obsessed with these out-there sounds, as well as their ability to metaphorically transport him to a world far away from the confines of his hometown.
Adopting a more electronic-based sound later on, he soon became a natural at conjuring up “house” tunes with more than a hint of soul, the likes of which spoke to his own Caribbean roots. In the process, Zepherin describes his own raison d’etre with concise charm as ‘championing the emergence of indigenous influence in electronic music’, something now so endemic to much of the most in-vogue house productions, displaying a worldview that values above all the organic and the human in this machine. 
While he’s undoubtedly best known for his work over the past nine years, establishing Tribe as one of the world’s leading labels pushing the afro and soulful envelope, his own legacy goes way back to 1988 when he released ‘Give me back your Love’ under the pseudonym Boyz in Shock, credited as the UK’s first soulful house record.
His label Tribe remains a vehicle for his many solo productions and collaborations and has hosted works and remixes from a diverse range of artists and legends across the electronic music board, as well as hosting his esteemed works with labels Defected, Suol, No Fuss, Soul 2 Soul, Vega records and Jack Trax. 
Zepherin’s productions deliver impeccable slices of soulful and afro sounds fused in a futuristic musicality in which he emphasises the tension that soul music can have, rather than the release. His tracks and particularly his dubs under his moniker Zepherin Saint, are often full of suspense and atmosphere – check his ‘Take You There’ on Suol, or his ‘Skyy and Butterflies Dubs’ released on his own imprint.
Equally respected as a DJ as he is a producer, Zepherin gained his schooling playing the London sound system circuit in the 80’s and managing the legendary Black Market record store in the 90’s.  His unique talents of playing dance music with no boundaries have been sought after in the likes of Japan, Africa, North America, Indonesia, Canada, Europe Australia and the Middle East, while on a club level he’s left his mark at world renowned clubs like Contact, Tresor, Watergate, Cielo, Stereo, Djoon, Ministry of Sound and Pacha. 
A man of many considerable sounds and styles, it’s hardly surprising that Dean Zepherin’s colourful and diverse approach continues to enthral clubbers and electronic music connoisseurs across the world.
