For this weeks podcast we decided to massively up the tempo from last weeks stunningly relaxed effort with a detour into the fast paced terrain of drum and bass and naturally turned to DC Breaks to provide this weeks exclusive podcast. 

For those of you less than familiar with the D&B pioneers it all started when Andy C’s seminal imprint Ram Records signed several tracks to Frequency Recordings back in 2005. This steady stream of releases helped cement the act's profile as both supreme DJs and future leaders of drum and bass and saw them storm the scene over the coming years, unleashing their anthemic basslines on dancefloors from London to LA, bringing big hype to the scene with remixes for major international artists  and labels such as Universal, Sony, Island, Parlophone, EMI and Ministry of Sound.

Far from studio hermits DC Breaks have spent years crafting their unique live performance in clubs and festivals around the world, DJing across 6 decks and two mixers, and as a result  have forged  a reputation as one of the most exciting acts in Drum & Bass for their willingness to break boundaries. So with this in mind and a fresh release entitled Gambino/Burning ft Camden Cox set to drop on Ram Records on November 18th, a remix for Loadstar on the horizon and a series of upcoming dates in Oxford and Bologna before returning to the capital for Ram’s Xmas bash on December 12th we thought the time was right to welcome them to the DT podcast to deliver the energy of one of their sets to all our fans not quite lucky enough to catch them in the flesh over the coming months!

Over the past couple of years the music of Austrian producer Mefjus has become synonymous with high calibre, sometimes ferocious yet always quality drum and bass productions.

These tracks showcase this expertly, the precursor to his debut album “Emulation” which will be released by Critical Music later this year.

Mefjus. If you don't know, now you know. The Austrian is one of the first names to roll off the tongue in discussions of that quintessential continental neurofunk sound. For those unawares, it's like the bastard child of drum & bass and prog-metal, and it's not for the faint of heart.  

Mefjus' forthcoming album Emulation is chock-full of absolutely fucking mental ruminations on the neurofunk style, and we've got the premiere of "Surrounded," a brutal bass-wave of a tune that at once batters your senses with intensity, complexity, and undeniable toe-tappin' groove.

Calling all drum & bass-heads, prepare for an all out assault on your eardrums! Newly signed to Blackout imprint, Pythius is set up release his new Abandon EP next week, and Data Transmission has secured an exclusive premiere of the earth-shattering title track.

Across 5 tracks, including a collaboration with label bosses Black Sun Empire, the Dutchman offers up his own unrelenting blend of neurofunk and jump-up. 'Abandon' brings together rapid percussion, 10 tonne bass and ominous synth lines; everything you need to tear apart a dancefloor!

Drum & bass stalwarts Black Sun Empire are to follow up a trio of recent EPs from The Upbeats, Neonlight and Pythius with the release of ‘Until The World Ends’ - a five-track, collaborative EP with NZ duo State Of Mind. To be released on January 26th via their genre-defining Blackout imprint, it marks an exciting start to 2015.

Lead track ‘Ego’ immediately sets the tone with growling bass lines and punchy synth-stabs that underpin dark, techy atmospherics and vocal loops.

Second track ‘Until The World Ends’ proves once again both acts’ enduring versatility - kicking off with a bass-heavy dubstep tones complimented by vocal duties from State Of Mind’s fellow New Zealander PNC, before

switching to a manic, intelligently structured groove for the remainder.

‘Bad’ opens with progressive percussion and softly-worked synths that move euphorically to a pounding drum break, whilst fourth track ‘Jack Nicholson’, featuring an imitable sample of the man himself, is a bass-fuelled shockwave of a track. Final track.

‘Moonbox’ closes the EP in true Blackout fashion, with signature frenetic beats and firing drums rounding off proceedings in style.

Black Sun Empire have built a reputation for curating their own brand of dark, neurofunk-inspired drum & bass over the past 12 months and this collaboration with long term accomplices State Of Mind - whom released their latest album ‘Eat The Rich’ via the label earlier this year - feeds into the hype surrounding Blackout as the label looks ahead to 2015.

Stressed Out is about facing big deadlines, about the gaps and space being as important as the tear out sections; a tune to sympathise with the erratic madness that is 'meeting deadlines’.

Sometimes it seems that people are looking at the world through the lens that craves ground shattering, earth-quaking emotion. More often than not, life happens in the detail, the day-to-day, the whispers, the smallest things that mean the most. A love song for the people who know that love is about work and time. 'Earthquakes and Whispers' is appreciating the smaller details, cherishing their importance.

Movement Across the Water is about still moments which can be equally beautiful and destructive, just like a placid lake - beautiful when it is still, but deadly when covered in ice.

Late Night Driving is street lights, high-rise buildings, dilapidated flats, pirate radio, urban decay, architecture, and bleakness. One for the 6 am heads that have just left the rave, it is still dark but dawn is breaking, the little arpeggiator lines are like the light just beginning to show. This one is about London, about driving home from raves. The final chord on this track is a tribute to ravers who stay to the end of the night.

April, a collaboration with Necrobia, took four April's to complete. Letting the percussion do the talking, the rides dancing with the bassline.

Expectant uses a classic EMS VCS3 synth. This track is a montage of an 8-hour session recording it.. The awkward groove pays respect to the less controllable nature of analogue, similar to how things might not go exactly as we planned in life but it is important to keep trusting we are on the right path.
