Black Math is a three piece band from Durban, South Africa. The band consists of Tyla Burnett-Bass Guitar, Cameron Lofstrand-Guitar/Vocals and Acacia Van Wyk-Drums. They are just three friends who went to school together and share a deep love for loud and heavy music. Black Math formed in 2010, they have since then made a name for themselves in the South African music scene and have grown into the power trio that they are today. Their sound is raw, unforgiving and will punch you in the face when you least expect it. They have developed their own unique sound that draws from genres like garage rock, psychedelic rock, stoner rock, punk and heavy metal. Their shows are very high energy, intimate and full of head banging (you will most likely leave the show with a sore neck). They strive to keep their music sincere and original and avoid current trends in sound and genre. They stand against all things made to be consumed by the masses and try to create something new and interesting. Black Math tries to make music that is thought provoking for all who wish to listen.

The Elektra/Asylum legacy of pioneering proto-punk continued with the 1976 signing of New York City’s The Dictators. With their tasteless jokes and loud, hard, and fast sound, the Bronx-based bunch of Converse-wearing, White Castle-munching wrestling fans – fronted by the self-proclaimed “handsomest man in rock ‘n’ roll,” “Handsome” Dick Manitoba – were the diametrical opposite to the polished AOR (FM radio’s “album-oriented rock” format) of the period.

Founded in 1973, the band broke up two years later, after the release of their epochal The Dictators Go Girl Crazy. The ‘Taters, as they were known to their loyal legion of fans, then re-emerged at the height of punk with their 1977 Asylum debut, Manifest Destiny. Bassist Mark “The Animal” Mendoza left the following year – ultimately joining Twisted Sister – but the band persevered and released Bloodbrothers, featuring lifelong ‘Taters fan Bruce Springsteen counting off the album’s classic opening track, “Faster And Louder.”

Disappointed by the lack of mainstream acceptance, the band called it quits once more in 1979. Guitarist Ross “The Boss” Friedman started mythological metal masters Manowar while guitarist Scott “Top Ten” Kempner was a founding member of pioneering roots-rockers The Del-Lords. In 1986, Manitoba and bassist/keyboardist Andy “Adny” Shernoff formed Manitoba’s Wild Kingdom, later to be joined by both Friedman and Kempner. The Dictators in all but name, the band soon readopted their initial moniker and continues to rock out in various combinations today.

Suzie Stapleton is an Australian-born alternative rock artist now based in the UK. She is known for electric live performances and guitar-driven noir soundscapes that cross into gothic-blues and alt-folk. 

Stapleton’s debut album ‘We Are The Plague’ was released in July 2020 on her own label Negative Prophet Records. The album was Voted Top 20 Albums of 2020 by Louder Than War alongside Jehnny Beth, Porridge Radio, Bob Dylan and more. She has received airplay on BBC 6, Absolute Radio, ABC, RTL2, Radio Eins and more. 

Stapleton self-produced the record which was mixed by Dan Cox (Thurston Moore/Laura Marling). Her band includes Gavin Jay (Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind) on bass, and Jim Macaulay (The Stranglers) on drums. 

Stapleton’s other recording projects include The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project (Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Nick Cave, and others) on which she performed vocals, guest vocals on two records with Lydia Lunch & Cypress Grove “Under The Covers” and “Twin Horses”, and an appearance on Crippled Black Phoenix’s latest release ‘Ellengaest’.

Stapleton has now settled permanently in Brighton, drawn to the sea and the pull of an ancestral tide - Stapleton’s grandmother was born in The Lanes in 1922, and her father grew up in the area.
