Back from a summer hiatus our first installment of the House DuJour series for FALL 2020. This mix features the House of Shelter. Timmy Regisford and his stable of abled producers. They work directly or indirectly with the Shelter, so I featured their productions here. A cornucopia of sounds from Mark Francis, Conway, Adam Rios, Mark Lewis, Dave D*Soul Rivera. Since everyday seems to be different and we are living in times that prove to be challenging. Let's slow down or speed up to the rhythmic sounds of House music. Born with Jazz and Reggae in her ear and Funk in her heart. It’s a logical progression that DJ Zion would evolve into musical landscape artistry. She began her quest of creative journeys at a young age while studying vocals and violin at a New York City Public school in the heart of Hip Hop’s founding backyard, Jamaica, Queens. Her love of dance has inspired her hands behind the wheels of steel to transform her musical soul and self-expression to a whole new level. DJ Zion is a House Music DJ playing AfroTechSoul. A sonic melting pot of Soulful, Afro, Global Soul, Minimal and Tech grooves. NY and NJ based. Playing music on stages large and small actively since 2014.  Founder of Yemoja SOL the internationally acclaimed podcast a musical diary of love and emotion since 2011. This journey spreads the LOVE of house music from a dancer turned DJ. Zion has shared the stage in NY/NJ with such legends as Tony Humphries, Timmy Regisford, ANANE, and Hector Romero. She has graced the stage at home and abroad with countless keepers of the craft Jihad Muhammad, Celeste Alexander, Coflo, Mark Francis, DJ Beloved, Naeem Johnson, Mikki Afflick, and Mark Lewis. She has also performed internationally in London’s Club - Alibi at ESCO and Afro Soulfest 2023 St. Lucia with Ian Friday and Herb Martin and AfroSoulFest 2024 Curacao with DJ Sres, Tyrone Francis, Duane Powell and Steve Maxwell.  

In addition she is a trained dancer, and a High School Culinary Arts Instructor for over 28 years. She has imparted her love of music into her work with children, in collaboration with SunDog Theatre.  She taught Music Appreciation to high school students for 11 years. The program exposed students to Western Classical music, as well as, music of the African Diaspora. The program won numerous grants and was supported by various Arts organizations in the state. 

Her love for house music began when local Harlem DJ’s travelled to the Catskills and spent the summer at “camp” which she attended for seven summers in her youth. When she wasn’t on her skates, there was definitely a wooden dance floor she was on from NYC to London. A chance entry into the famed Garage nightclub at the age of 16 would inspire her to dance and travel the world searching for rhythms and dance floors to groove.

Her metamorphosis from singer, dancer, actor, chef, photographer, to DJ is an evolution of a journey that is predetermined and colorful in it’s voyage. As an underground artist she is well sought after and yearns to move a dance floor near you. For the love of Dance, for the love of House…L.O.V.E.
