Commissioned by the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival - Yale School of Music and premiered 8/17/24 at the Norfolk Choral Festival by the Norfolk Festival  Chamber Choir, Jeff Douma conducting.

When I was a kid I had an impossibly difficult time understanding lyrics in music. Whether it was the top 40 hits on the car radio or hymns in church, my brain always wanted to classify the voices I heard as just more instruments, timbres and nothing more. It took a deliberate effort on my part to be able to hear the voices as actually saying something, as meaning something, adding an additional layer of communication to the message of the music. 'whereof one cannot speak' in some ways tries to dramatize this experiential movement. It starts with the text — a little poem about language I cobbled together from fragments of Wittgenstein — broken into their smallest constituent phonemes, signifying nothing, functioning as sound alone. Over the course of the piece these sounds are pulled together into larger and larger chunks of the text, laboriously moved out of the realm of abstraction and, bit by bit, into recognizable language with meaning to convey. Only by the final sections of the piece can one actually hear what the words are trying to say.

Minimal Effort is a collection of live hardware jams recorded over a three-month
period in 2022 at Rotunda Compound.
The tracks were built using a compact setup of analog synthesizers, drum
machines, and effects. Everything was sequenced and performed live in single
takes, with no editing or arrangement after the fact—just light EQ and limiting on
the master to bring the level up.
The result is a direct and unpolished snapshot of process: hardware-driven techno
built live in the room, focused on improvisation, repetition, and texture—with all
imperfections left intact.

If you asked where this mix was recorded, I would say "Detroit" without hesitation and if I thought about it for a bit, I would guess that it was most likely one of Mike's legendary closing sets at No Way Back at Tangent Gallery. The level of care and reverence that go into these sets is very evident in this mix from start to finish. The track selection moves effortlessly from past to future playing with darkness and light, depth and joy, tension and release. It's a remarkable demonstration of taste and skill but also a paean to Mike's personal artistic history that calls to the creative power center that Detroit comprises. This mix provides a true glimpse into Mike's long-term dedication to the art of working in tandem with the dancefloor, creating a shared journey where the challenge is to let go and just trust the DJ."
