Bavarian bad boy @Zombie-Nation returns to Turbo with SOMETHING ELSE.

Freshly relocated to NY, Munich-born Florian Senfter shows off the sound of his artisanal Brooklyn studio with this expertly produced EP of club-ready bombs. Title track ‘Something Else’ flexes serious sonic skills, with a low-end that has enough weight and definition to make an experienced producer want to throw in the towel and do something else with their life. The vocal hook lifts the pop potential, the trippy synth fx keep things weird enough for the people on drugs, and the loose drum samples add just enough funky town to get normaloids on the floor. Top notch. Hit. 

Workhorse might as well be called 'Zombie’s theme’… it’s classic Zombie Nation, with a devastatingly simple, catchy bassline that filters and modulates its way to frenzy alongside sparing hats, clap, a fat kick, some nice analog bleeps and a single word: 'work.’ It jacks, it builds, at the end it literally bubbles with the man's vibe. Unmistakable sounds and arrangement. Why don’t more producers have this much of a ‘sound?’ Because they’re not this good.

Horsework flips things around into even funkier formation, with the same vocal sample repeating over a groove that seems destined to bounce it’s away across every Dirty Bird loving dancefloor / BBQ until the apocalypse.

Finally, A Numbers Game separates itself from the otherwise air-tight EP-seal-of-precision (Turbo A&R clearly value quality above concision) recalling the gritty sounds of ZNs alter ego John Starlight, with a touch of the off-the-rails energy and insanity of ZZT. 

Respect. Maybe even a little fear. He's that good.

zombie nation -  Something Else

With the latter half of 2013 being dominated by a flurry of activity from the newfangled Ultramajic imprint, Berlin based label founder and scene veteran Jimmy Edgar reflects on the growing discography by remixing 'Whip', a standout track from the burgeoning canon.

With the original cut having garnered early support from the likes of Boys Noize, Loco Dice and Scuba, Edgar flips the the dub sensibilities and Chicago style
vocal chops off the elusive Aden into a proper New Jersey house joint, teaming with exuberant keys and irrepressible bounce.

Set for release at the beginning of 2014, it prefaces EP's from the likes of Sophie (Numbers / Huntleys & Palmers) and Danny Daze (Hot Creations / Plant Music).

The Italians call it notturna, the French nocturne, in Spanish it’s nocturno, while the Estonians say öine. (Trust the Estonians to be different.) A nocturne is a French term to describe a musical composition that is inspired by or evocative of the night, which seems apposite. The most famous modern nocturne is, of course, ‘Harlem Nocturne’, as recorded by countless jazz musicians. If you like, you can just call it the night. The point is it’s when the fairies come out to play and the bass is at its loudest (the two are not necessarily related). 

We’re back in the low-tempo, high-octane zone. Our tempo might be slow, but the quality control makes Louis Vuitton look like Poundland. We’ve gathered together some of the hottest new material, with some judiciously chosen old gear, an edit or two and blended them together like a disco nutri-bullet. 

Among the exclusives is the amazing Lindstrøm remix of Charli XCX’s ‘You (Ha Ha Ha)’, alongside a pair of exclusives from Emperor Machine and Hugh Mane and two belters from Hotel Motel.

Taking the core of Trance and giving it a new shell, treating early synth music like remnants of a forgotten civilization and translating them into a language his generation can understand, turning club and rave into sacred artifacts to be sent as a message of love and passion into foreign worlds, that is what Maxime Prieur alias Doline is trying to do, and the results sound like nothing else. 

An all-time melody-fascinated Doline reached out to Sound Pellegrino after hearing Teki Latex’s “Deconstructed Trance Reconstructed” exercise-in-the-form-of-a-mixtape at the end of last year, claiming we should lend an ear to his own work as he thought it was leaning towards the same logic and exploring the same discourse between drumless Trance and broken riddims. And boy, was he right! We instantly fell in love with his pack of demos which included “Karidja”, which we put on our “SND.PE VOL.04” compilation, as well as two stand out tracks: the ravey “Landeoff II” and the cinematic “Elusive” (which channels Sound Pellegrino’s recurring appreciation of ‘70s film score-flavored synths). “Cus D’Amato” came a bit later and blew us away with its slow-paced otherworldly romanticism. 

With these three tracks, 23 year-old Doline is creating something pretty unique-sounding. Of course you can trace influences and cues from Trance (obviously), Grime, RnB, Techno and Ambient but Doline assembles them in opposite ways from current trends, concentrating on pristine purity rather than the omnipresent re-hashed sped up ‘90s vocal gimmicks. In an era where everything has been done before, it’s refreshing to hear someone putting together bits from pre-existing genres in a new and unexpected way, giving them a new context and a new function.
