Bosnia is a southeastern European federal state. Geographically, it consists of the Bosnia region in the north - which occupies around 80 percent of the national territory - and the smaller Herzegovina region in the south. The federal state's political areas are the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republika Srpska and the Brčko District as a special administrative region. The state's capital and largest city is Sarajevo; other major cities are Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica, Bijeljina and Mostar.

The national territory lies east of the Adriatic Sea on the Balkan Peninsula and is almost entirely in the Dinaric Mountains. Neighboring states are Croatia to the north and west, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the southeast. The state also has an approximately 25 kilometer long coastal strip on the Adriatic near Neum in the Neum corridor. The Bosnian-Herzegovinian population was a good 3.3 million in 2020 (see Bosnians and Herzegovinians).

The state in its current form emerged from the Dayton Agreement (1995) and, according to this, is the legal successor to the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was founded immediately after a referendum at the beginning of 1992 and was the only internationally recognized of a total of four state entities on the island during the Bosnian War territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Treaty of Dayton ended war within the country and created a unified but highly decentralized (federalist) state. Today Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of the two entities Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (populated mostly by Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats) and Republika Srpska (populated mostly by Bosnian Serbs). The Brčko special administrative region was subsequently created from parts of the pre-war Brčko municipality belonging to both entities and today functions as a condominium for both entities, but manages itself independently.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a member of the Central European Free Trade Agreement, the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (observer status), the Council of Europe, a participant in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Cooperation Council for Southeastern Europe. Furthermore, the state has been an official candidate for NATO membership since 2010. At the summit of the EU member states in Brussels on December 15, 2022, Bosnia and Herzegovina was officially granted status as a candidate for accession to the European Union. On March 12, 2024, the EU Commission recommended starting accession negotiations. On March 21, 2024, at the EU summit in Brussels, the heads of state and government of the European Union agreed to start accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
