My inspiration for music itself goes far into the roots of dancehall; I always loved the rhythm of a beat. Each beat creates an image for me and a story; it could either be a tragic story, a happy story, or a life lesson story. With Hip-Hop it works for me because it’s not all about “rapping”, but the art and the story behind it. As a kid growing up I always was into poetry because I struggled with a speech impediment, so writing was always my way of setting free. Most of my poetry was based on the darkness I felt in my life, hoping to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. I would always write lyrics but not to an instrumental, I would write freely as just as my poetry. What motivated me to even attempt to rap with a beat, was my teacher and my close friends. They would read my raps and say “that’s nice” but I always felt they were just saying that, because that’s what friends are for. At that moment I saw that I doubted myself to even believe I can even write a brilliant rap. So I empty that negative mindset and I started to practice my craft and flow the entire 2015. The name Zumana appear to me while I was thinking of a name, and ironically it has many meaning but the most important is “artistic”. It took me a while to find a perfect flow that was fit for me, it was either I was rapping too fast or too slow, so I had to maintain a steady pace. When I founded my flow I said in 2016 I would release my first track on SoundCloud, the first song was call the “Great I Am” the song represented the world. I never thought it was going to be a great song but probably decent song, being that it was my first track song. The feedback I receive was tremendously humbling not knowing people would actually cling to the song and support it. Ever since that song I’ve been pushing my music to be better than the last song. Each song style is diverse because I never stay with a one set type beat, but it works well with me because my name means “artistic”. What I wish to achieve is to illustrate the beauty of different genre music and that is the art that only you can paint and describe.
