I wanted to create a dark hip-hop song but forced myself to include atleast 2 synth melodies and strings so below is how the song was constructed as making the older style hip-hop songs on a hard tip and yet still be original is getting ever harder to do.

How was this song made?

Started of finding 3 x Hip-Hop beats that would marry up in layering but give a kick arse pressence without being the dominant feature (which nowadays most music is only hi-hats and kick...stuff that), Then actually set out creating the chorus sections first with the strings which are a single shot in key recording taken from a real orchestral then extended to make lengthy runs. Then created the synth rise/fall loop on the Roland JD-Xi synth that you hear right at the start and in the chorus sections. Next came the bassline and needed to create these bassline from scratch so used an instrument app called the "TAL Bassline App" and used my favorite setting "Soft Bass" to create bass riffs for chorus and verse parts but again keeping the bass sound in the mid area of the mix so not to be to hot in the mix. Next came the Church bell which came from the same orchestral recording set I like to use for real sound and presence in the emotion. Next came the verse old school style using alot of one shot sounds and key changing them before carefully arranging them to create the tense, hard elements in the background making the verse sections a dream to rap over. Finished of with creating a couple of dark piano hits to also place into the verse sections also as one shots so the blend was natural. Then some cymbals and rides to finish of.

Effects Used: iZotope's Elements 9 for tonal balance on a few song channels and over the pre-mixdown master. Valhalla VST Shimmer was used on certain sounds for increased depth and also Polyverse "Comet" for background wash or certain sounds.

DAW Used: Fruity Loops & Studio 1
