On a Saturday for a friend’s birthday

Sparklehorse and John Darnielle and Spank Rock and Why? And Somehow at Sea
Maus Haus, Son Volt, Daedelus, Restiform Bodies
And on the futon before we got that L couch locked in a lover’s hold

And I wondered about you and me together growing old
Until our warmth somehow grew cold
Like the breeze beside the ocean as overhead fog rolls
Over the Bay, the ocean’s brisk sway, holding you against it all I somehow felt bold

We’d take the BART to Muni to the bus to Ocean Beach
Your friend rented a bus we drove south to the water for your birthday
We’d lie on the sand in Alameda
We’d canoe together on the Russian River

But that day that we went to the Santa Cruz boardwalk
Was one of the best days of my life
