I discovered DJ Koco a few months ago, watched many hours of his DJ sets, and was so inspired that I created a DJ set in tribute and gratitude to him.

DJ Koco aka Shimokita is Japanese, blind in one eye, and plays exclusively on 7" which are small vinyl records, hard-to-get and challenging to work with.

His craft and technics are masterful and he can perform all the "turntablist" tricks in the book. You know, scratching and cutting from deck to deck and much more.

I appreciate that, but what i'm really inspired by, is his art, style, and musicality.

In one DJ set he weaves old school hip hop, Brazilian, Latin, Disco, Rap, House, Funk, Jazz,  Pop, and many other genres and styles.  It all flows seamlessly and naturally. 
He plays both well-known anthems and songs very few people know. Trying to Shazam his songs is an exercise in futility. 
Koco keeps an upbeat, energetic and happy vibe throughout his journeys. I love to see how much he enjoys his music. 

I was already an open-format DJ and included many different genres, but watching DJ koco and listening to his sets gave me even more inspiration and the reminder I can play anything i wish, as long as it fits the vibe.

I loved hip hop since the late 80s when I heard Eric B and Rakim's sampling of Israeli/Yemenite singer Ofra Haza, as well as "Rapper's Delight" and other songs.
I remember that more than anything, I loved the syncopated (not symmetric) rhythms, the beats and the samples.

Many people think "Hip Hop" is the same as gangsta rap, and always includes "rapping", vulgarities and such.
I never resonated or related to those themes because my life circumstances are different.

The kind of Hip Hop I love and play here is mostly instrumental and features jazz, soul, funk and lots of Brazilian and Latin samples.     
Nearly any Hip Hop song you can name probably includes a sample from an old record. Visit whosampled.com and find the origins of your favorite songs.

In the past I usually did long transitions between songs, but now I experiment with very short and quick transitions, sometimes as short as 8 beats.

I'm also inspired by Koco and DJ Nick Spinelli to play just the best parts of the songs - What Nick calls "Quick Mixing". 
On average, every song here is only 2 minutes long.

I included a few of the songs DJ Koco plays, as well as my own favorites:
A song from the first James Bond movie, Israeli Bossanova, 3 versions of "Rapper's Delight", Balkan Hip hop, a remix and a cover of a 80s and 90s anthems, a piece by my good friend Adrian Atma, who is a multi-instrumentalist and beatboxer, and an amazing melodic samba song which is a journey by itself.

I have hundreds of songs for the next journeys and I've already been dropping some of them in my Ecstatic Dance, Tropical Chillout and Party sets.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
