hailing from lisbon, portugal, syntagma developed some thoughts regarding society, politics, globalization and the impact of economics in the human experience. they gathered some spoken word by several intellectuals such as john cage, alan moore, terence mckenna and eduardo galeano. even though this ep rides along something like mindful soundscapes, deep minimal techno and trippy deep house, syntagma hopes that the listener will think about subjects that are not a common focus of modern dance music -- hence offering a deeper side to the genre. you also get a mesmerizing remix courtesy of doubtingthomas, who hails from london, uk, but was born in france. so go on, let it all sink in, and flow with the groove.

"Herbario is the Spanish name given to a collection of dried plants and flowers preserved in an album. The collector usually writes with pencil the name of the herb, the place and date of collection, thoughts, and the habitat where the plant was collected from.
 
I live in a place surrounded by mountains and wild gardens which are, to me, a source of inexhaustible beauty. Through them I feel the passage of time: an ancient, circular temporality that follows the course of seasons, dialogues with the dark stillness of the mountain and the moon calendar. Each musical piece of Herbario has the name of my favourite flowers and trees.
 
Through a year of uncertainty, from March 2020 to March 2021, I composed this album in the same way a botanist would have proceeded: collecting and preserving simple, broken and hypnotic melodies.

Continuum-collage piece by Lithuanian composer Arturas Bumšteinas created in 2015 from incidental music sampled from various Lithuanian radio drama's from the 1950's to 2000's. A strange heady brew which juxtaposes music, sound effects, rudiments of vocal expression and various acoustic instruments among others in a compelling cut-up, reminding at times of People Like Us or Dirk Schaeffer's recent work for Peter Tscherkassky's movies. Edition of 70 copies.

for today's sound i wanted to explore the e350 morphing terrarium oscillator. maybe some nice sine waves or bells, which is how the patch started out, but it ended up a bit "woodier" or at least more percussive in some ways.

what we have here is an e350 being played by a moskwa sequencer going into an echophon delay. but where the fun really happens is the echophon delay time is providing the clock for the sequencer, so it's always in sync. however, the clock it's outputting is being divided by 3 from a 4ms rotating clock divider, so the sequencer clock is going 3 times slower than the echo.

further clock division pulses are hitting the cv inputs of the pittsburgh filter to give it some knocking sounds and the e350 wavetables are being modulated by attenuated lfos from a uLFO.

to add further fun, the feedback path of the echophon is going into an intellijel uVCF in bandpass mode and i'm playing with feedback amount and filter feedback to get some cascading, feeding back delays.

i think that about covers it. this one was fun.

After an almost 6 year hiatus, and the break up of the audio-visual trio it had evolved into, Origamibiro returns with Miscellany, a body of work amassed during the years since the release of 2014’s Odham’s Standard.

Though the group never officially disbanded, a number of life-changing events meant it simply became impossible to continue together. As such, the project organically reverted back to the solo pursuits of composer Tom Hill. Fellow multi-instrumentalist Andy Tytherleigh, however, remains a strong collaborator.

Miscellany comprises a varied mixture of work, ranging from electroacoustic to orchestral chamber music. Drawing upon much of the found-sound style for which Origamibiro became known, the DIY approach to sampling and composing continues to play a central role in the process.

Exploration into the tangible nature of everyday objects and textures - both in and outside of the home - is a theme relished in much of Origamibiro’s work. Forest brambles and plastic toy Easter eggs are examined in surgical detail alongside the debris of demolished piano parts, to be repurposed into whatever sonic potential they offer up.

However, new additions to the instrumental palette - viola da gamba, piano, zither, singing bowl, glockenspiel, drum machines and gongs - contribute to an even broader timbre.

With over 100 physical releases since its inception by Taylor Deupree in 1997, New York-based music label 12k has decisively defined and developed the concept of minimalism in the realms of electronic music for more than a decade. Fusing elements from Ambient and Electro-Acoustic Composition with carefully arranged digital textures and associative micro-noises, the label's aesthetics revolve around a precisely-outlined, yet deeply emotional concoction of the technological and the organic.
