Yuo're Life You'r Tsois

With the one physical release to her name, Nina Trifft isn't an instantly recognisable name, however the cassette and online mixes the Golden Pudel affiliate has released have earned her some worthy attention. Nina is a Hamburg local and one of the many cogs in the tight-knit community keeping the city's Golden Pudel club ticking. Her own night took up residence there for more than four years, and artists to play included the likes of DJ Richard, Shapednoise and Mix Mup to Broken 20's TVO, Samuel Kerridge, and more. Alongside Helena Hauff, Brian Not Brian and Thought Broadcast, Nina also contributed a release to Blackest Ever Black's cassette sub-label Krokodilo Tapes by delivering Kiran Sande's offshoot No Observable Effect Concentration in 2014, a mixtape colourfully described as "soundgirl punishments... Equal parts cyberpunk body-horror and real-deal harbour city sorrow."

Online you'll find her mixes over at Berceuse Heroique and Berlin Community Radio, among others, however her musical pursuits don't stop there. With Tobias Duffner, the pair set up their own V I S label earlier in the year by debuting local Hamburg entity SPR which had Juno Plus editor Tony Poland likening the music on EP1 to "Shackleton in a particularly bad mood." With Nina's gigging schedule taking off, she's found herself playing in and around Berlin, to Norbergfestival up in Sweden and Krakow's Unsound next month, and following a chance encounter at this year's Fusion Festival we were able to net a vodka-whiskey-fuelled mix from her, shaded not too differently from the sound bombs she delivered Krokodilo Tapes. Burly, UK-styled rave tackle from Berlin’s Phon.O for Tectonic after spending the last few years exploring subsets of garage-techno on 50 Weapons. Clearly carving towards Tectonic’s ruder ‘floor criteria, he plays out the dank, shadow-boxing 2-step drums and swooping subs of Mercurial next to the aggier grime slap of U8 Phunk for the Berlin scallies, and yokes some splintered breaks into a submerged jungle-techno chassis with Bell Blender.

As a kid growing up in Illinois' tucked-away capital of Springfield, Justin Cudmore played the drums at home and in school as a jazz percussionist. In his college days Justin dove into electronic music, workshopping new-wave influenced beats in bands and DJing parties. Currently, Justin is a fixture across Brooklyn, popping up on dance floors and behind booths, where he has spun records at his Hotmix parties along with Mike Servito and Gunnar Haslam. 

“Crystal” is Cudmore’s debut 12” single. Raw, rough and ready to rumble, “Crystal” marries snaking acid lines and bouncy grooves to a sample from cult underground film classic 'The Queen'.  On the flip is Detroit-bred and Bunker resident DJ Mike Servito’s “730 Reshape”, that gives the wiggly worm vibe harkening back to the early days of Transmat, Warp and the minimalism of Dan Bell's DBX project. L.I.E.S. mainstay Gunnar Haslam provides his “Dekalb Avenue Remix” made while living in New York, a modular synth cruise with the top down. All tracks have been mastered and EQed for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley and labels are as pink as Crystal’s lipstick.

"Next month will see the debut 12th Isle release arrive in the shape of Thoughtstream, an album recorded by St. Petersburg-based duo Dices + AEM Rhythm Cascade. Set to arrive in the silk-screen artwork from White depicted below, the 11-track album was recorded over the duration of 2015 by the Udacha and Gost Zvuk affiliates and channels “aspects of early sequence-based electronics and vintage space rock around a diverse and playful compendium of rhythms.”

For their second release, 12th Isle proudly fling 'Blubber Tottum' into the waxen sonic abyss for your full listening pleasure. The inaugural LP drubbed from the Glaswegian machines of Cru Servers is perhaps best framed as what it would sound like if early life took its first steps out of the primordial gloop, dragged itself ashore, decided to make dance music and discovered they had a knack for it. It dangles precariously in the fault lines between discordantly melodic rhythm tracks, steadily paced chaos and swamp-soaked bass oddities. Laden with eerily familiar samples yet always in a world of its own.

Cru Servers - Blubber Tottum LP (ISLE002)

Experimental cinema sonics, electroacoustic research practice and shadowy wind instruments come together to form this unique interpretation of the mythical city of gold. Utilising rare, half forgotten Soviet era synthesisers Vladimir Karpov creates immersive soundscapes under the name XYR. The Formanta mini keytar and the Alisa 1377 lend Karpov’s music strange, seldom heard atmospheres which the St. Petersburg native then combines with field recordings, toy percussion and wood flute to further build upon his utopian narratives.

Part concept album, part nod to Popol Vuh, his attempt to channel the thematics of the ancient tale of the Muisca people through his modest home studio left a lasting impression on us here at 12th Isle and we’re proud to present a selection of the tracks on vinyl for the very first time. Originally confined to just 25 cassette tapes, for this edition we have assembled some of the most inspiring tracks from the sessions as well as the bonus closing piece ‘Aguirre Song’. Immediately engaging, sincerely heartfelt and strikingly original, these are recordings we have returned to time and time again.

Seemingly drawing from a slightly different well of influence from that seen across their prolific back catalogue, the Aarhus duo – going by the less common shroud of Palta & Ti – have hereby woven together a stylistically varied yet tonally concentric 3 track EP. Having produced a wealth of some of the most lovingly referential and consistent music of recent times, the tracks making up “Palta og Ti på den Tolvte Ø” are slightly harder to pin down to exact genre markers. Each song is busy yet never overcrowded with elements; building concise and playful grooves which if forced we would say positions them somewhere in the ambient space between jazzy-improv-house and dubby, hypnotic electronics. That’s as absolute in adjectives as we would ever care to be...

Expertly crafted both technically and musically, we are more than excited to be able to present this to you as our fifth instalment.

Palta & Ti - Palta og Ti på den Tolvte Ø (ISLE005)

Five years ago, the expression ‘Russian electronic scene’ had borne a tone of futurology and expectancies rather than a real state of affairs. It was possible to put together musicians of local and genre importance easily in general, but not of significance in national scale. With rise and further development of ГОСТ Звук, Russian electronic music achieved power not only as cultural phenomenon within country’s borders, but also proved fully to be a thing of international meaning. Starting operations in 2014, the label quickly defined its domains of authority and engagement and created full-bloody community of musicians, where everyone has a special view on his own work and unique sound. The projects presented on this compilation can be rightfully called the contemporary vanguard of Russian and global electronic music.

Each of resonant artists holds his own disparate creative field and impact. However, in this diversity the unity of creation of beauty and ingenuity is born, that distinguishes Russian independent electronica. All compiled tracks perfectly characterize the artists involved, sometimes from extremely striking sides; chaotic improvisations and ethereal grooves, unearthly landscapes and undistracted concisions. Both electric boffinry and club anthems merge into united vision, placed in graceful frame of Rashad Becker’s mastering.

Maybe this compilation won’t close the question ‘What is the Russian Sound?’, which has been raising for more than a twenty years. Nevertheless, it is able to give an extensive view on the evolution of Russian electronica in the 2010s.

From their native St. Petersburg, Square Fauna evoke a score for imaginary protoplasmic oceans, surreal, sepia-tinged space operas and Russian sci-fi folk tales; lush, green landscapes littered with the burned out husks of automobiles, military vehicles, and askew telephone poles no longer in use though marked by pools of water in which can be found the debris of modern society.

Primitive kosmische electronics and vintage spacescapes cascade around complex polyrhythmic percussion. Ethereal mists of gaseous reverb are scattered by windswept synths and white-noise striations.

‘Meet The Fauna’ is as much of a cheeky nod to The Residents and Coil (or even Haroumi Hosono and John Hassell) as it is to the likes of B12, Black Dog, Richard H Kirk.

A completely singular, modern sci-fi soundtrack for the discerning sofanaut.
