Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU (@kamarujoseph), is a sound artist and experimental ambient musician, raised in Nairobi, Kenya, and currently based in Berlin. Recent years have seen KMRU find a place amongst the most stirring voices within the experimental music space, courtesy of his distinctive usage and combination of field recordings, noise, ambient textures and expansive hypnotic drones. 
A luminous presence within the scene, KMRU has garnered critical acclaim not only for releases on the likes of @warp-records, @editionsmego and @subtext-recordings, but also for his live performances, which have seen him take the stage at high-profile events across Europe and the globe.

KMRU’s Patterns of Perception 105 is a poised and evocative passage which floats gracefully between delicate instrumentation, melodic phrasing and abstract ambient textures. Sparked by recent inspirations and experiences, this indelible set embraces peace, stillness and vibrance in equal measure, coming together as a carefully divined tapestry - meditative and shimmering.

JD Walsh is an immensely talented multi-disciplinary artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. His excellent visual artwork, mostly sculpture and design, gives some added context to his musical compositions as Shy Layers, whose excellent self titled debut LP was without doubt one of last years finest releases. The product of decades of experimentation, exploring sound and quietly releasing tracks online, from the first note to the last ‘Shy Layers’ is a record of beautifully engaging and visually evocative compositions that could be broadly described as Balearic pop. There's a delicate balancing act taking place within his work that perhaps owes much to his career in visual arts. If you’ve not yet had a chance to experience this little sonic gem then I urge you to give it a spin.

Whilst the vocoded vocals on his debut LP are as much an ode to Daft-Punk and Kraftwerk, and their are many other notable influences throughout his solo work including elements of Ethio-Jazz, chill wave and 80s synth pop, one of the most obvious reference points for his excellent self titled debut is African music and specifically the guitar playing style of Highlife (see ''Too Far Out’’ and ‘’Bees and Bamboo’’ for fine examples). Highlife emerged as a direct descendent of West African Palm-Wine music whose earliest exponents, no doubt inspired by the native alcoholic beverages stimulating properties, gathered to play guitars thought to have arrived courtesy of Portuguese traders. Combining their local melodies with Caribbean Calypso the upbeat approach was very popular in the 50s and 60s before it’s more Jazz orientated sister genre known as Highlife took its place.

And it is this influence which Walsh has chosen to focus on with his delightful addition to the Métron Musik Mixtape series - a barnstorming adventure through some of his favourite African music, packed full of beautiful vocals, African guitars and some serious groove. Yet Walsh's melodic pop sensibilities are written all over this mixtape and it’s no surprise that his selections revolve around some of the most infectious pan-African melodies. Its a joyous experience, full of sunshine and positivity sure to put a broad smile on your face.

We were very excited to learn that there is a new record on it's way but if you’ve not yet heard his excellent debut head over to the consistently superb Hamburg based label Growing Bin Records to pick up a vinyl copy and support both artist and label. Last summer we heard Sanshiro play a superb late night set in a Tokyo bar alongside our friends Takumi, Morita, and Julian Horn. He frequently plays around the city and shares records from his collection over on his “Deep Dance Music Page” site, a blog he has been running since 2005. In the Japanese tradition it lovingly presents an insanely wide-ranging amount of music from all across the globe, often with personal descriptions. For this mix, Sanshiro assembles a ton of avant-garde percussion alongside some reggae, funk, jazz and latin sounds

Jacques Charlier is primarily known as a visual artist, which obscures the fact that he’s been actively multi-disciplinary for the entirety of his career. Born in 1939 in Liège, Belgium, his interest in all forms of art began at a very early age when he aspired to be a poet, writer, musician, comic book artist, actor, and movie director, and in his own eccentric way became all of these things.

In the 1970s, inspired by the minimalist sounds of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, John Cage, and Meredith Monk, Charlier armed himself with a custom guitar, and sound modulating effects and started experimenting on his 4-track. He performed psychoacoustic pieces in Liège, Antwerp, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Milan and Düsseldorf, and in the inimitable performance art video “Desperados Music”, filmed by Paul Paquay in 1979 for Belgian television. Charlier hit a creative stride in the 1980s, recording off-kilter tunes influenced by everything from post-punk, EBM, Yé-yé and psychedelic rock. Similarities reside in the catalogs of Belgian labels Crammed Discs and Les Disques Du Crépuscule, yet even with these genre-bending precedents, Charlier’s music is idiosyncratic to the extreme. In 1984 and 1987, he self-released two cassettes incorporating synth, drum machine, his custom guitar, and vocalist Martine Doutreleau on occasional duets.

This limited edition 7” single offers the previously unreleased jangle/darkwave jam “Kiliwatch”, backed with “Loulou”, a scorching psychedelic oddity from one of Charlier’s original cassettes. It precedes the upcoming double LP compilation of Charlier’s music, and is the perfect introduction to his curious and complex artistic vision.
