Darkroom Dubs maintain the energy and positivity from a surprisingly beautiful summer, as many of us have been lucky to move around and play again. So let's plunge headfirst into the new season with these two emotional stunners from Spanish ace Undo. 

Following his remix of Alejandro Paz & Local Suicide’s ‘Directions’ earlier this year comes Undo’s first full single for Silicone Soul’s label. Two beguiling pieces of work that capture the freshness and vitality of the dance floors right now.

‘Acid Summer’ is a palpitating, subtly acidic march into an exquisite sunrise. Shimmering, spacious, crisp and full of poignancy; it’s the type of tune that gives you all the time you need to take everything in, soak it up and feel every pore on your skin ripple with the sentiment and saviour the moment. 

‘Tempesta’ subverts temporal boundaries even more as we’re swathed in big dubby washes and broken beats before the bumping kicks usher in layer after layer of acid, pads and textures. A real journey of a tune that never sits still, reminiscent of Underworld’s best work like ‘Cups’ and ‘Jumbo’. Comparisons don’t come much higher than that but neither do the vibes. 

Expect plenty more from the Darkroom Dubs camp before we sign out of 2021. Let’s keep the energy and positivity flowing. These are times we’ll never forget.

Following its 5 Years of DGTL anniversary release, DGTL Records welcomes French artist Chloé (@chloe-dj-producer) to the family with Night Rider. Complete with a Roman Flügel (@roman-fluegel) remix of its title track, the EP offers the latest in this multi-talented artist’s accomplished and diverse repertoire. Night Rider is set to release on May 27th with pre orders available on May 20th.

In leading an entire generation to her formula-defying music, Chloé’s music goes beyond club and techno. The Lumière Noire boss has been releasing unwavering sonic compositions since her 2002 debut. From there, many releases would follow on the likes of BPitch Control, Live at Robert Johnson, Kill the DJ, My Favorite Robot, and Throne of Blood. But Chloé’s interest in art and human matters goes beyond simple sound machines, having also produced work within the 3D sound, photography, musical analysis, and film composition spaces.

Night Rider kicks off with its eponymous track. Featuring soft vocals set against a synth driven melody, the track harkens back to the cassette futurism of its classic-series source inspiration. From there, Three Nights in a Row is an anthem to the long haul. Is it for the afterhours or the early minutes? When the days and nights blend together, who’s to say? Wrapping things up comes a Night Rider interpretation from the one and only Roman Flügel. The German legend maintains the original’s oracular tone, ramping up the percussion and tension as only the master of machines could.

An obsessive seeker of sound, whether in her prodigious DJ sets or original compositions, Chloé embodies the life within the digital. With a career unfolding through a narrative of subtle contrast and ever-inspired curiosity, Chloé is a singular artist in a permanent state of reinvention.

In what one could probably call "the lost remixes", we unearthed two unpublished cuts which fell to the roadside for any number of inane reasons that we have forgotten since. What we didn't forget, however, is how damn fine these reworks are. Take for example MICHAEL MAYER's take on KAITO's "Behind My Life", an obvious highlight on both Kaito's EP and full-length offerings last year, but as the rest of his work not really lending itself to radical remix treatments - the typical ambience of a Kaito track is too delicate, it seems, for the good ole "let's stick a fatter bass drum underneath it and be gone" routine. That's when you realize how masterful a remixer Michael Mayer actually is, turning the epic soundscapes of the original inside out and into a relentlessly grooving house stomper. The melodic break is where it's at on this one, giving them punters ample space to get truly lost in sound. The flipside holds its own set of surprises with SASCHIENNE's ingenious boogie reboot of MOHN's "Saturn" off their 2012 debut album. Originally a kind of kraut-infused synth jam with all the time in the world for the contemplation of infinite truths and the possibility of space travel, it has now become a tightly knit space cowboy opera full of special effects and exciting laser shootouts. Because you know what they say: a vocoder a day keeps the doctor away.

Chained to a ladder: There’s no way up. There’s no way down. You’re hung on a rung and there’s there no place to escape as Dino Lenny delves into your innermost psyche with this heavy slice of pedigree Italian electronica. A Darkroom Dubs debut from the original craftsman, ‘Chained To A Ladder’ is ominous in its mood and tone, dramatic in its new romantic vocal style and uncompromised with its devilish analogue aesthetic.

Remix-wise we’re unquestionably spoilt as label bosses Silicone Soul unleash their first production of the year with an immense 9+ minute cosmic bluesy stew, cooked slow and low with deep psychedelic flavours. A version that develops the original’s story in a stark way; this is what remixes were invented for.

Last but not least, Dino seals the deal with ‘The Right Place’. A broken drum mutant powered by technoid rocket fuel, its breakbeats drive a writhing groove that’s awash with touches of classic electro, new beat and hardcore with dark broadsword bass sweeps. Splashed with sudden blasts of synth colour, Dino’s signature sense of contrast is visceral, focused and direct. A true homage to every genre’s foundations and salute to the future; tremors can be felt from techno to drum & bass.

As the recently released ‘Darkroom Dubs Volume IV’ celebrated the last few years of releases, Dino sets the scene for another exciting chapter for the label. A chapter that will see the label continue to explore its signature atmospheric late-night sounds and celebrate its 15th anniversary this year. We’ll leave you hanging right here…
