First of the eclectic hardcore/jungle sample-spotter mix series.
It's a selection spanning multiple genres from the 60's to the 90's, the common thread being - as ever - that each track was sampled by the hardcore/rave/jungle/DnB scenes - some have just one signature sample, others have been rinsed. Some of these records are incredibly obscure, dug up with help from the RolldaBeats and WhoSampled camps - others are long-standing personal favourites of mine.
This time I've included a few cheeky set-pieces based around reconstructions of hardcore/jungle tracks, or at least paying tribute to them, so keep an eye out for D'Cruze's Bass Go Boom, 4 Hero's darkside classics Journey From The Light and The Element; a trio of Foul Play samples, a cut-up reconstruction of Leviticus' The Burial, a 115bpm tribute to DJ Hype's Tiger Style, and plenty more besides. I can assure you that no jungle records were harmed in the making of this mix, original sources only. And they are so good. As ever - hope you enjoy.

Wayne Goodlitt sets aside his Roska moniker and takes up his Bakongo alter-ego for a Bleep mix which injects a dark edge into the UK Funky sound that he has become synonymous with. Across the mix the listener is led through a whirlwind of tuned drums, throbbing low-end and booming bass drums. Drum-line percussion arrangements abound, often wedded to dembow or broken-beat kick patterns but sometimes left to run over four-to-the-floor stompers. In addition to tunes from Nightwave, T Williams and Karizma - the latter of who’s aptly-entitled shuffler ‘Strings Emotional’ closes out the mix - we are also treated to a glut of Bakongo-produced heat throughout. This one’s a power hour for sure.

The Scary Mix

Much of dance music might have been on pause in 2020, but not Roska (@roskaroskaroska). The vital underground powerhouse has continued to put out a steady stream of high quality singles both solo and in collaboration with the likes of Syren Rivers, Ruby Wood and Serocee. He collected them all together this summer on Eight Trax, a mini album on his own Roska Kicks & Snares which tells the story of an artist who still finds freshness in UK funky having played a key part in its initial emergence over a decade ago. On top of this, he also assumed his Bakongo alias again recently to serve up his unique take on UK rhythms with the new 3 x 2 EP on Livity Sound, which comes after years of veering into UKG, house and various other mutant strains of bass heavy music on labels like Tectonic, Rinse and Hotflush.  

This week he digs deep to serve up a podcast filled with a mixture of his key influences and personal favourites. "The whole theme is how genres outside of dancehall have been influenced by dancehall," he says of a sunny selection including material from Sean Paul, Major Lazor, DJ Gregory, Kenny Dope, Karizma and DJ Zinc next to plenty of his now new beats old and new. It's a real history lesson that brings us right up to the present day and beyond.
