Our sixth VA compilation continues in the collective spirit at the heart of Pressure Dome; here taking its fullest form. The first of its kind in the label catalogue, ‘Two [Is Greater Than] One’ sees a selection of PD regulars and friends of the label put their heads together across eight atmospheric tracks, equally as suited to the club as to solo listening. 

Those who have followed the label for a while will be no stranger to the comp’s first collaborator. Human Resources teams up with London dub techno specialist, Keplrr, on ‘Spring’: a mood-led composition where the impact is contained in atmosphere. Fragmented drum breaks are engulfed by airy synth pads and punctuated by a dancehall-indebted rhythm that marches at 90BPM. ‘Yuppel’ welcomes Noods Radio mainstay Sid Quirk aka Keppel into the mix. He is joined by label boss, Yushh, on a ruminative percussive tool, guided by cavernous drums that fabricate a vivid, immersive environment. With the guidance of Brighton’s Caldera, the journey continues with Süss Choc. The reverb-laden synth plucks on ‘evoke water droplets, and hallucinatory details echo around them to create the illusion of being in a mountainous cove.

Delay Grounds – an audiophile in the truest sense of the word – is next to take the baton. Together, he and Yushh take it up a notch on ‘Telomere’ – a full-bodied club-ready track packed with glitchy chords and giddy drums. A gnarly, Pariah-esque breakdown segues into the track’s second wind where pitched-up vocal chops accelerate it to the compilation’s energetic climax. With the help of London drum specialist, Syz, ‘Fuzbidun’ keeps our feet firmly on the dancefloor. Breakbeats are chopped and rearranged, flitting between double and half time whilst a distorted mid-bass roughens things round the edges, prepping the ground for the compilation’s move to a more inorganic feel.

Bristol don, Forever, joins Yushh next on ‘Passing Notes’ – a groove-driven club track where skittish percussion ricochets from side to side, so palpable it tempts the touch. ‘Crash Bash Party At BUFOs’ is no different. The link-up between Delay Grounds and dance music’s stalwart of musique concrète, Wordcolour, is completely idiosyncratic to both artists: the perfect combination of found-sound percussion and skillfully rehashed vocal samples. It’s up to two PD mainstays – Roy Mills and Human Resources – to close proceedings. A chugging rhythm bubbles under the surface of ‘Sycophantasy’, sending us on a dubbed-out trip before picking the pace back up again.

Axefield's music is inspired by hollow halls and large brutalist buildings that make us feel so small. Transpersonal World guides your meditation making you feel like you’re standing in the hall of a massive industrial cathedral. Ancient Memories evokes exactly that as images from the past run through your veins. Do we feel a certain way? The synth patterns resemble steel pipes whereas the bassline sounds like large concrete slabs swiping you off your feet.

By definition, "atonal" refers to composing music by obscuring tonal structures or by ignoring conventional harmonies altogether.

It is also the moniker that Loris Scaglia adopted to express himself creatively, rewritten with a diacritic across the second vowel to accentuate the idea of no restraint when it comes to sonic exploration. For the better part of fifteen years, ATØNAL has been a music enthusiast, experimenting with sound through different disciplines in the likes of music production, DJing and event curatorship.

Influenced by 90s and 2000s club music, ATØNAL has crafted his own signature style through a formidable eclecticism in the realm of Electronic Dance genres. Shifting between Bass, Breaks, Garage and Techno-infused sounds, he blurs genre barriers through sets as sharp as they are unexpected.

Although native to Lausanne, ATØNAL has explored the better parts of Romandy through residencies through nightclubs such as le Zoo. Now back in his home town, he holds a residency at Le Bourg as a co-founder of the platform Breakfast Club where he showcases the Swiss electronic scene through various projects he oversees. ATØNAL is one to proudly incorporate while simultaneously generously giving back to his community.

How does one stay authentic to their roots yet consistently evolve? Perhaps by intertwining the lines between the personal self and artistic persona. This avoidance of tradition to welcome innovation is something evident in his work. COUNTERBALANCE is a work ethic ATØNAL adopted to level his visual and sonic creative endeavours. A glimpse into his activities, whether by working in advertising during the day or the usage of cap locks in his titles, reflects an urge to be present and expresses that branding is very dear to him. An ongoing thought process in the separation and attachment to one’s self with a pseudonym to do just that: be loud.

We are proud to present ‘Undercurrents’, the third series of compilations featuring artists from the 3024 Mentoring Program.

Started in 2020, the Mentoring Program run by label owner Martyn has become a worldwide online and IRL community of artists sharing resources, ideas and inspiration. This compilation showcases the wide range of fresh and amazing music that is continuously surfacing from the program, unbound by strict genre definitions.

Besides a collection of new music, Undercurrents is also a consideration of what a record label can be in 2024. Whether it’s a platform for repurposing old material, providing daylight for new sounds, artists or even entire communities, or injecting new ideas about authenticity and sustainability into the current of the underground, rather than partaking in the unwinnable race over algorithm dominance. An understated approach for maximum impact.
