Bassline Seeking Companion (name constant's Spark It Up & Rub It On the Glass Version)

this weeks project provided a massive dilemna for me, there were so many amazing sounds and astounding tales last week that I had really hard time trying to choose.

I ended up with the first 20 seconds of 337is'  "National Tennis Centre, Melbourne, Australia, 1989"  and the whole of (I'm sorry I know I was supposed to use only part of) Hideyuki Kuromiya's
"Incidental G"  both beautiful in their own right, looped them, and added the last ingredient (as prescribed by my physician or doctorb Marc) to glue them together, a couple of samples from the movie Serpico (it's a slow burn but well worth the watch). Thanks  to 337is and Hideyuki for you lovely sounds and sorry to all the other people I didn't use, whose sounds were equally as lovely.

I did nothing to any of the tracks except for a little delay on the very last Serpico sample and a fade out on 337is part.

After finding and layering loops from those two works I thought about how to 'glue' them together and decided that some live Saxophone should do it. I recorded it with intention to get a nice breathy sound that would mix well with the loop from 337is. Found a scale that suited both loops and improvised along with them.... A bit of mixing, EQ, reverb etc and here it is!

Built out from 0.0207% (disquiet0191-heldchord), originally by 337is - a Disquiet stalwart and modular meanderer. Repitched & restacked; oblivion reverb ripples through the filter wall; parrots shriek; chimes ring and a dog barks somewhere.

This is my first time mucking around with someone else's work and I found it quite challenging.  337is's style is quite a bit different from mine; I tend to have much more structure and he is much more ambient to my ear.  For this, I wanted to keep his graunchy analogue sound front and center with some minimal airy metallic support.

To make his track a little meaner sounding I reversed it and ran it through a wave shaper, chorus and phaser.  The added tone is a pretty plain string sound overdriven with two competing phasers, some EQ and delay/reverb.  My overall attempt here is to stay in the minimalistic analogue sensibility...quite a challenge for me, and made me put myself in a different headspace.

Sleepless Silhouettes [337 stems-in-bud]

First off let me apologize for my horrendous British accent and the fact that I have no dog in this fight. It seems like it is a big deal in the press but I am sure they will move on to other news. I can see both side's arguments and their merits. I am not a big fan of globalized corporations or bureaucracy (I can't even spell bureaucracy) but I also hope that we humans can work together on things peacefully. The world is connected now and this connection will bring us together whether we want it or not and I think this in the long run is a good thing. I also know very well there are dark things in every heart and the world is not all cookies and cream. No Country Is An Island (disquiet0234)

This week's Junto was to make a new song from samples of the first 30 seconds of three of last week's Junto entries - courtesy of the Creative Commons licences. I chose to use:

I took snippets from each, and then used the settings for the looper in AcidPro to create versions that had different lengths (by setting the number of beats present in the sample, and by changing the type of stretch used). I then overlaid these and added a bit of reverb, EQ, panning, volume and envelope controls to them. I also added some samples from my own collection - in this case some clicks, also processed in the same way.

The Assignment: Make one track from three different netlabels, courtesy of a Creative Commons license.

This week’s Junto project builds directly on last week’s, though you needn’t have participated in last week’s to join in this one. This week we’re remixing remixes. The remixes we’re remixing are the pieces that resulted from last week’s project, which involved taking three tracks from different netlabels and making one new track from them. Last week’s Junto project celebrated derivatives, as licensed by the Creative Commons. This week’s celebrates derivatives of derivatives. (Thanks to Audio Obscura, aka Neil Stringfellow, for proposing this week’s project.)

These are the steps:

Step 1: Select and download three tracks from last week’s project, Disquiet Junto 0233:

All the tracks in last week’s project were made from the first 30 seconds of three pre-existing recordings: “HNY” off the album Wormbole by ʞık (Karl & Karlik) on the Bump Foot netlabel, “Pepper Jelly” off the album Recombinations by Andre Darius and Riley Theodore on the Haze netlabel, and “Autista 3” off the album Autista by Pablo Reche on the Impulsive Habitat netlabel.

Step 2: Extract the first 30 seconds from each of the three remix tracks that you selected in Step 1.

Step 3: Create an original piece of work including that source material from Step 2.

Step 4: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This project was posted in the late afternoon, California time, on Thursday, June 23, 2016, with a deadline of 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, June 27, 2016.

Length: Length is up to you, though between two and three minutes seems about right.

The seemingly limitless manifestations that are observed during improvisational performance of electronic audiovisual materials drive me to seek collaborative interactions between compositional systems, machines, and myself. In holding space to facilitate an emergence of indeterminate phenomenon through analog synthesis, feedback systems, and field recordings, I share elements from multiple sources to celebrate shapes, patterns, and spaces.

I hold BAs in Art and English from Andrews University, and am currently enrolled in the Electronic Integrated Arts MFA at Alfred University. I was an artist in residency in 2017 at Signal Culture in Owego New York and in 2015 at Sachaqa Centro De ARTE, San Roque Peru. My visual works, and live electronic improvisational performances, have been featured across Peru, at The MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, and throughout the Midwest of America.
 
Note: Much of the work here is subtle in nature and I encourage you to listen via headphones or using a decent system whenever possible. Most computer speakers will not reveal the tracks fully.
