Program Note
Stars have had their sights set on me for quite some time. 
In 1989, I set to music the poem Crazy without you by the American poet Anne Waldman in which a whole series of stars are described in their various colours. In 2006, L1014 for percussion was created, inspired by Reginald Smith-Brindle's percussion composition Orion M42, and in 2022, the electro-acoustic work Albireo, which was inspired by the vastness of space. The piano composition Beta Lyrae (2023) and the electro-acoustic composition Jezero (2024) - named after a Martian crater - both received their astral titles in retrospect. And now Gesang der Sterne (Song of the Stars)! 
Since 2020, a NASA team has been working on making space tangible with the help of music. In what is known as data sonification, elements of an image are assigned pitches and volumes. Whether this process does accurately reflect the actual sound of the Milky Way can only be guessed. In space, there is nothing that can carry sound. There is absolute silence there.

Programmnotiz
Sterne haben es schon seit längerem auf mich abgesehen. 
1989 vertonte ich das Gedicht Crazy without you der amerikanischen Poetin Anne Waldman, in dem eine ganze Reihe von Sternen in ihren vielfältigen Farben geschildert werden. 2006 entstand L1014 für Schlagwerk, das von Reginald Smith Brindles Schlagzeugkomposition Orion M42 inspiriert ist, und 2022 das elektroakustische Werk Albireo, bei dem die Weiten des Alls als Anregung dienten. Die Klavierkomposition Beta Lyrae (2023) und die elektroakustische Komposition Jezero (2024) - benannt nach einem Marskrater - erhielten beide ihre astralen Titel erst im Nachhinein. Und nun Gesang der Sterne! 
Ein Team der NASA arbeitet seit 2020 daran, das All mit Hilfe von Musik erfahrbar zu machen. Bei der sogenannen Datensonifikation werden Elementen eines Bildes Tonhöhen und Lautstärken zugewiesen. Ob dieses Verfahren dem tatsächlichen Klang der Milchstraße gerecht wird, lässt sich nur vermuten. Im Weltraum gibt es nichts, das den Schall tragen könnte. Dort herrscht absolute Stille.

Step 1: You may or may not be familiar with the literal meaning of the word “karaoke.” The first two syllables are the Japanese word for “empty.” The final two syllables are an abbreviation of the Japanese word for “orchestra.” Consider how the term “empty orchestra” connects with the idea of karaoke.

Step 2: Think about the term “empty orchestra” on its own, apart from its association with karaoke. Come up with a new meaning for it. What kind of genre or musical form would “empty orchestra” be on its own?

Step 3: Record a piece of music exemplifying the ideas that arose to you during Step 2.

Disquiet Junto 0657 was an invitation to compose a pice out of overlapping tones that start and stop suddenly.

I created multiple layers of synth pads, each holding a single note of random duration in the key of Am. Next I bounced the audio, slowed it by 75%, and reversed it to create abrupt stops in each tone. I blended that audio back into the mix to provide a low aural foundation. On top of this I recorded a couple of additional pads with held tones, chopped up with a grain stutter plugin. To wrap it up, I improvised a couple of wandering leads with "broken" synths in Cmaj/Amin.

I worked hard on the spacial mix, so headphones or a good pair of stereo monitors are recommended.
