The Studio Dog - a Border Collie also known as Moss, was my constant friend and ‘studio assistant’ until passing away in March '21 at the grand old age of (about) 14. I say “about 14”, because Moss was a rescue dog who had made his way over the Irish sea with the Border Collie Trust, following goodness knows what abuse had left him both physically and psychologically damaged.

It took many months to gain his trust, but after a couple of runaways and a spell of literally running around the walls of the living room, he gradually began to venture from his hiding places at dinner times - and then finally, after a long session of me laying motionless on my back in the garden, he got up the courage to emerge from behind some shrubs and lick my head! From there he blossomed, investing the most unimaginable trust and love - in his new family, and in his new life. 

This track is from The Studio Dog, an album about Moss and that journey. It’s a requiem I suppose, but one entirely recorded during his final days - with him gently declining beside me. It was complied the morning after he passed away and I’ve left it entirely untouched thereafter, with no time fixes, or overdubs - save for the addition of a few pre-planned field recordings.

“I'm growing more and more fond of imperfection. This isn't some knuckle dragging reaction against technology, but rather I just find the humanity of error engaging - and the accidents it causes often more interesting than perfection.
Maybe it's because of this, that I'm repeatedly drawn to earlier electronica, where imperfections were an unavoidable by-product of playing, bodging and stitching-together electronic compositions using tape loops and delays.
This is why this track - and in fact the entirety of the album it features on "Walk-in Diorama" sounds as it does. It was all played by hand, with no sequencing, click-tracks or time fixes. Just played and combined using 4 stereo tracks.
People have mentioned it reminds them of Cluster or Harmonia. I did not set out to do this, but it seems, this way of working results not only in a feel, but also in a style, a time or even in a place. I find that interesting in itself." /Giles

A new track - as is our Christmas habit, but this time remembering Nelson Mandela one year since his passing.
At that time a collaboration was just surfacing with friend Wolfgang Merx and ‘subject to the moment’ this project would turn to reflect Mr Mandela and particularly his fortitude whilst incarcerated on Robben Island. Where partial solitude and afternoons in the 'stone yard' failed to dim his inspirational even handedness..
A free EP will be released in the new year..

Love -  I've always shied away from the four letter word. Maybe it was the schmaltz of popular music, but I'd had enough of "moon in June" love songs before I was old enough to buy recordings - and I guess, it's taken me until now to get over it!

However this album is undeniably about being "in love". That's human love, but it also touches on the love of things, the love of ideas and my enduring love, of places. All these loves are genuine - and because of this, it was very easy to be inspired by them.

The musical driving force was what I guess you'd call intuition.
I did not plan this album. I just went along thinking "I want this track to feel like this" and then let it happen...

What's it about?
Myself & Wolfgang wanted to explore the possibility of working 'together in separate studios' - but without lots of multi-track files. Meaning that once a recording was handed from one to the other, it could only be altered as a whole - for example by adding more sounds or manipulating everything at once, but not re-worked in bits. So in other words, these recordings are a true overlay, rather than ‘all mixed up’!

"We like the immediacy of this approach and by extension, we’ve not tinkered with the results by removing any recording faults or clicks, or otherwise interfering with Antonio de Braga’s delicious drumming! Similarly our inspiration for the music was direct and uncomplicated, with the sad passing of Mr Nelson Mandela coinciding with the project’s outset, we found our reflections settled very readily on his compassion and fortitude.

A little while back my name ended up in a hat for a project of collaborations - the lucky-dip chose Man Meets Bear, and yesterday was the first clear day for recording. 
So it was into The Little Studio - flicking on the red lights & scanning the news feed... David Bowie had died. 

All day I just kept recording. This was the result.
