The Studio Dog - a Border Collie also known as Moss, was my constant friend and ‘studio assistant’ until passing away in March '21 at the grand old age of (about) 14. I say “about 14”, because Moss was a rescue dog who had made his way over the Irish sea with the Border Collie Trust, following goodness knows what abuse had left him both physically and psychologically damaged.

It took many months to gain his trust, but after a couple of runaways and a spell of literally running around the walls of the living room, he gradually began to venture from his hiding places at dinner times - and then finally, after a long session of me laying motionless on my back in the garden, he got up the courage to emerge from behind some shrubs and lick my head! From there he blossomed, investing the most unimaginable trust and love - in his new family, and in his new life. 

This track is from The Studio Dog, an album about Moss and that journey. It’s a requiem I suppose, but one entirely recorded during his final days - with him gently declining beside me. It was complied the morning after he passed away and I’ve left it entirely untouched thereafter, with no time fixes, or overdubs - save for the addition of a few pre-planned field recordings.
