James B. Wilson is an award-winning composer and storyteller whose music confronts the realities of modern life — from climate justice to the quiet crisis of loneliness explored in his WHO-inspired Siren Song. He also draws inspiration from literature and the natural world. His landmark work Remnants, responding to an iconic image from a 2020 BLM protest, reopened London’s Southbank Centre after the pandemic in collaboration with poet Yomi Șode. And in 2023, over a million people heard 1922 at the Last Night of the Proms — a work celebrating the BBC’s centenary and written in solidarity with its embattled orchestras. He is drawn to human stories.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Wilson studied with Gary Carpenter, David Sawer, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. His music spans solo, orchestral, electronic forms, and the voice. He has received commissions from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Britten Sinfonia, Chineke!, and many others, and has won the RPS Composer Award and Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award. His music is broadcast and performed worldwide. Described by the Financial Times as “an oasis of deep feeling,” his work is fierce, emotionally charged, and shaped by a bold and human voice in British music.
