A Chicago native, Lori Branch is considered a pioneer DJ in Chicago's House music scene and one of the first females to grace the decks as a DJ and promoter. As a house music historian, Lori is featured in a number of documentaries, magazine articles and television specials. She currently hosts the Vintage House radio program and podcast and is a member of the Good Girls DJ collective along with Hanna Viti, aka Vitigrrl, and Darlene Jackson, aka DJ Lady D. 

Lori enjoys playing House Music everywhere for everyone. ❤️

DJ SGZ is a fascinating figure. From South Africa, he worked with figures and labels including Distant People, Tom Conrad, Adaptation Music, Peng Africa and more. He stepped away from production in 2019. "I worked with a lot of great people and got ripped off by many," he says. "I'm not complaining, instead I'm glad because they taught me the game and now I'm coming back strong." 

"Why Would I" was originally titled "Butterflys," because "a butterfly is a symbol of resurrection. I knew that this was going to be my comeback song," SGZ says. 

We asked him about the making of the track for our newish feature The Teardown, inside the making of some new and classic electronic music tracks.

TheTeardown: DJ SGZ ft Carla Prather - Why Would I (Radio Edit) [Nightshade Music Group]

We’ve got a very special release for you here from Manuel Tur and Adrian Hoffmann going under their Clavis guise.  Regular followers of the label will no doubt be familiar with their project having previously released four EP’s on Freerange and gaining a lot of love from the likes of Dixon, Ame and Solomun in the process.  

The duo have also recently remixed Ane Brun, made a full EP for André Hommen’s These Eyes label and had a track included on the latest Innervisions Secret Weapons V/A under their Amberoom moniker. 

Camira sets the tone for the EP with a percussive groove which balances electronic and organic sonics perfectly. Hazy synth chords give way to a seismic, snaking, analogue bassline before a plucked cross-rhythm sample takes centrestage bringing a drifting quality to the track.  The track exudes deep, hypnotic and mesmerising qualities but with a tough, driving feel which will make this sound incredible on a big system. 

Title track Wirefire comes next and takes things in an altogether darker and tougher direction but without ever sacrificing it’s amazing groove.  This is just our kind of techno - speaker-shaking low end, intense yet perfectly timed bending synth notes creating some serious drama, and a minimal drum groove which is guaranteed to bring heat to the dancefloor. 

Closing out this brilliant release we have Matinada, a gentler, more melodic workout to bring us back to earth following the craziness of Wirefire.  Building Crumar string chords add a euphoric feel without getting overpowering and little synth motifs drift in and out of focus keeping things interesting and evolving without becoming cluttered or too dense, something which Clavis are absolute masters of!
