Sitting at the forefront of the global techno stage, Slam, need no introduction!  They are the masterminds behind the coveted Slam Radio podcasts, and their record label Soma records. They have  recently returned from a North American tour which included sold-out parties at techno strongholds, Basement NYC & Compound Warehouse LA. From powerful 6 deck back to back sets in renowned clubs such as Fuse in Brussels and Berghain in Berlin, to their forthcoming live shows at many festivals this coming summer , Slam are bringing their much revered and distinct techno sound across the globe and now to Different Sounds Podcast." From deep pools of ambience to the brain-feeding mechanisms of electro and techno, Nadia Struiwigh’s gift is in expressing herself with conviction through her machines. As an accomplished live artist and producer, her affinity for synthesis and sequencing results in a spellbinding strain of electronica drawn from a richly personal sonic space she has marked out for herself. 

Struiwigh’s recorded output has appeared on labels like Central Processing Unit, Nous’klaer Audio and Dekmantel - albums and EPs which reach from crunchy sequenced beats to vast swathes of pure, melodic tones. Her roots in Rotterdam and current location in Berlin equally speak to her affinity for techno - propulsive, dynamic machinations which manifest in DJ sets as well as live hardware performances. 

As a teenager enthralled with the Warp school of electronica and leftfield downtempo, Struiwigh was set on a path of discovery where the intricacy of production met with her impassioned, intuitive approach to composition. Her exacting approach to the technical aspects of the craft has earned her the knowledge to extract her own voice from any medium, but more importantly her music emerges from a very human need to communicate and connect. 

That connection is best manifested outside the studio. Struiwigh’s live sets range from patient, beatless immersions to kinetic peak-time rushes, sometimes straddling the divide in line with her omnivorous passion for ambient and techno alike. At times she’ll present her released works in a more patient, listening setting, while for the sensory overload of the dancefloor she tends towards a more improvised, open-ended approach to techno and electro. The exact make up of her live rig changes from gig to gig, keeping her inspired and ensuring no two performances are the same. 

High-profile shows in concert halls sit alongside strobe lit club sessions - she’s since become a resident DJ for Tresor to indulge her love of driving, psychedelically-charged techno, while warm-up sets give her the chance to indulge the deeper dimensions of the music she loves. The range of her tastes can be heard across leading platforms such as RA, Phantasy, Bleep and Red Light Radio, who have all invited her to their esteemed mix series’. 

Plugged into the moment and constantly exploring new dimensions of her sound, Struiwigh champions electronic music as a springboard for possibilities. With an exquisite clarity which comes from both technical skill and clear-eyed intention, her music thrives on heart and experimentation, powered by machines with as much character as the human at the controls.

Materielle is leaving a lasting imprint on the worldwide sonic tapestry that is dub techno. Her style pays homage to the genre’s deep roots in sound system culture while innovating to broaden its horizons.

A familiar face at clubs and warehouse spaces throughout Southern California, Materielle has firmly ingrained herself in West Coast techno. Her spacious sound signature breaks from the local scene’s status quo, however.

Despite having now played records casually for over a decade, Materielle waited until 2019 to start her professional music career. She debuted at The LASH in LA, and in the years since she has performed at Academy LA, BANG BANG in San Diego, and Techno Taco Tuesday in Las Vegas. She also regularly plays at underground parties organized by Dirty Epic, Synthetic Minds, and Incognito, not the least of which is the Spring 2023 edition of RE/FORM FESTIVAL.

2019 also marked the launch of DECKREKORD. Originally Materielle’s Twitch channel, it grew popular as the pandemic unfolded the following year and naturally expanded to function as a record label. Her first-ever track release, “Dichotomy,” appeared on the imprint’s inaugural 2021 compilation The Offering. Soon afterward, she landed on Delusional Records with a remix of “Out of the Shadows” by label cofounder Marie Nyx and they later signed her third release. 

“Satin,” a 2022 single that speaks to Materielle’s range of creative expression. Lush and atmospheric yet purpose built for the dance floor, its brutalist synth stabs perforate tightly woven ripples of reverb delay. Materielle captures a similar dynamic in her DJ sets. She alternates seamlessly between airy ambience and low end frequencies that somehow resonate at a high vibration to explore the cerebral side of dance music.

Materielle has positioned herself to open the minds of music lovers across the globe. With each passing day, her future grows more closely intertwined with that of dub techno.
