Compound X launch the first of two brand new labels, Distopic Utopia Records, with a powerful EP that features their own essential originals as well as remixes from Mike Buhl and DCXH4L. 

Distopic Utopia Records will serve as a platform for multidisciplinary artists, DAR aka BROHN aka Brohn Smith - a DJ, producer, remixer and designer who was a former partner in No19 music - and DULUM aka Dave Roberts - a DJ, producer and mixing engineer - who alchemise all manners of experimental techno. Their productions infuse an interpretation of heavy rock inspired techno with subsonic grooves and industrial cinematic scores. After years of playing major festivals and clubs globally and more recently forward-thinking spaces in Paris and Berlin including installation experiments and runway shows, they are celebrated for their infinitely evolving and infectious style. 

Opener 'Black Salve' is a tense and bleakly atmospheric cut with hypnotic drum programming that is deep, speedy and dubby, while all manner of haunting sounds peel off the groove. 'Kaleidoscopic Delusion' is then more streamlined - a dark and alluring techno cut that takes you in a shady tunnel and keeps you there. 

'Seventh Sanctum' is the lat original and a tune that layers up unsettling ambience, distant sounds of automation and heavenly apparitions into a spooky and atmospheric bit of innovative downtempo techno. Aussie techno titan Mike Buhl has long been driving his home scene forwards and here he remixes 'Black Salve' into a lurching monster, with huge hits and intensely pressurised bass that will blow up any club. Last of all, the mysterious DCXH4L remixes the same cut into perfectly stripped back but dynamic dark techno that rolls and rolls further down the rabbit hole.

Hello Im Pav Modern, founder of Modular Recordings home of The Avalanches, Cut Copy, The Canyons, The Presets, Wolfmother and Tame Impala amongst many others many others.

Before my life as a record company I was a concert promoter and had the good fortune of promoting artist such as Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Fugazi, Pavement, Sonic Youth Pearl Jam, My Bloody Valentine, Hole, Bikini Kill, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs , LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk and hundreds of others across Australia and New Zealand.

I created The Summersault festival in Australia and an island festival in Croatia called For Festival and curated/creative directed events in Australia like Vivid Live 2011 and most recently the UNPOPULAR  exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum.

Compound X is the multidisciplinary duo, Brohn Smith and Dave Roberts. Both dedicated journeymen, their visions melting psychedelic rock, house music, funk, techno, and pop, together they alchemise and synthesise their own variant of ground-breaking rhythms. Compound X debuted with great success at Dark Mofo festival in Tasmania, Australia, 2021, and recently the duo signed two limited edition record labels ”Distopic Utopia Records” and “CX BLACK” with Republic of Music in the UK, partnered with distribution partners Universal Music worldwide.

The duo made a subsonic impact with their monster “Sending Me Signals” EP with two highly anticipated follow-up singles dubbed “The Freak” and “Rave Against The Machine” being released on their imprint “CX BLACK”, alongside their two studio albums “Make It Bounce” and “Make It Stop”. Compound X melt rave and pop music into a web of dance floor euphoria, coining “techno rave pop” and is aimed at big main stage sound, adjacent a fully immersive audio-visual live show.

Compound X’s innovative sound first debuted in April 2020 on Distopic Utopia Records, the act's dynamic range and genuine sound artistry are what set Compound X beyond the status quo. A sub-dimensional beast, a consistent assault, something that’s displayed within their output, melting multiple creative medians that forged a tectonic movement in music, fashion, art and events.

The duo’s solo careers expanded to performances and showcases at Robot Heart (Burning Man, USA), Fabric (London), BPM Festival (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico), Sonar Festival (Barcelona, Spain), DC10 (Ibiza, Spain) and Panorama Bar/Berghain (Berlin, Germany). Also a regular at the helm for the Watergate family in Berlin, alongside executing sound and visual installations at Darklands in Berlin and curations alike at Paris Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Sydney, Australia.

It is this range that sees the pair exploring and thriving in production, DJ sets, live shows, film scores, installation experiments and scoring runway shows. An infinitely evolving sonic and cinematic itinerary delivering a forward-thinking take on electronic music, fashion and audio-visual art.

We like it raw, unfiltered, analog, painful, loving, broken, fixed, (in)sane, naked, (un)covered, discarded, forgotten, lost, and found.
