Washington, D.C. – BLACK TECHNO MATTERS releases its 17th digital album, Owl Theory, by Memphis-based producer and DJ, Darnell Stewart, aka DJ DanceAlone. 

DanceAlone, previously known as Dakuan, elevates his unconventional approach to conventional music with this release. Using his quintessential sample-based production techniques melted over enjoyable grooves, he crafts a complex story of Black history in America. 

The concept of “owl theory” comes from Kathleen Peterson’s murder in 2001, where, despite evidence that Kathleen was killed by a large owl, the state prosecuted her husband instead. The album Owl Theory explores this “guilty until proven innocent” treatment that many black people face in America—on trial and in everyday life.

 This 11-track journey intends to represent the parts of Black culture that make America resent Black people in a way that deems Black people “guilty” by simply existing. The intro track, “Sliced Ice,” is a scintillating opener that begs the listener to understand the message of the album. Almost every track that follows uses an intentional use of samples from films, speeches, and conversations that dissect “vignettes” of Black American culture.

DJ Dextro’s ‘Motivo’ EP on CLR begins with the first part of the title track, in which dubby synths swish and roll between thudding kicks while sturdy claps keep the rhythm. ‘Motivo 1’ is a powerful techno tool, smooth with a deep and dreamy atmosphere and perfect for those late-night trips. ‘Motivo 2’, on the other hand, lends to the darker side of techno, its low-end bubbling among alien machines as its sequences ride and click along the drums, making for a potent and hypnotic club track.

 Active since the early ‘90s, Portuguese artist DJ Dextro lands on CLR following a vast discography on labels like UNCAGE, Planet Rhythm and Portugal’s very own Naked Lunch Records. He’s also a prolific remixer, having reworked music from artists such as The Advent, Scuba, and Drumcomplex. With the ‘Motivo’ EP, DJ Dextro shows his decades of experience with two detailed techno compositions, which rightfully find their place on Chris Liebing’s celebrated CLR imprint. 

Founded by influential techno lynchpin Chris Liebing in 1999 and reemerging in 2021 after a five-year hiatus, Create Learn Repeat (CLR) has hosted a range of artists like DEAS, Shlomi Aber, Drumcell, Truncate and more while also focussing on developing newer acts in the scene such as B. Riley, The Southern, and Klint.

We return with one of our regular artists Dusk Poem and they delivered a magical 4 track EP called “Lower Worlds”

We start with the title track “Lower Worlds” and starts off with relentless beats and a haunting feel, creating an atmosphere that is both hypnotic and intense. The driving bassline and intricate percussion work serve as a testament to Dusk Poem's technical prowess and creative vision.

Track 2 of the EP is “Eve of Conflict” and immerses listeners in a world of rolling grooves and perfectly executed synth work. The track’s energy and dark undertones are designed to captivate the audience with its complex layers and raw intensity, making it an essential addition to any underground set.

Track 3 of the release is “Hive Mind” offers an unfiltered intensity in the form of bubbly synth elements and driving percussions that create an almost hypnotic state, pulling the dancefloor into Dusk Poem’s sonic landscape.

The last track of the release is “Invaded” a track epitomizes the essence of techno. With its gritty textures and uncompromising drums, this closing track leaves a lasting impact, ensuring the EP end on a high note and is a statement to Dusk Poem’s ability to create music that is both intense and evocative, capturing the raw energy of the underground scene
