"Plainsound Duet was written in 2018. A companion piece to my earlier duo Gioseffo Zarlino, it similarly explores two possible melodic modes which divide the major third into wholetones, one larger (9/8) and one smaller (10/9). In this case, the counterpoint invites the middle note to continually change its tuning by a syntonic comma, sometimes higher, sometimes lower, by following a path suggested by simple consonances."

With ‘CHORDS’, the Stockholm-based musician and composer Ellen Arkbro returns to Subtext, following her acclaimed debut album ‘For Organ and Brass’.

This new longplayer sees Arkbro adopt a more minimalist approach, focusing on the immediate qualities of sound and elegantly expanding the tonal capacities of acoustic instruments using precise, subtle synthesis.

Composed of a carefully selected combination of tones, ‘CHORDS’ stretches, extends and obscures the timbral character of the instruments it is performed on.

Across both tracks, Arkbro examines the sonic materiality and harmonic quality of chords. She considers how the compositions occupy space rather than time – transposing theoretical possibilities into the phenomenal realm.

As a part of Arkbro’s systematic investigation of harmonic sound, ‘CHORDS’ proffers a divergence from conventional ways of listening. This work allows for a form of listening which goes beyond the mere reception of outer stimuli in letting the listener experience their role as active, and as embodying the sound itself. Space rather than time becomes the primary locus of listening as subtle movement of head and body reveals the inner complexities of ‘CHORDS’.

Selected by Curtis and Tashi Wada from recordings spanning the past two decades, the collection offers a broad, inclusive view of Curtis's activities across the diverse worlds of music he inhabits, containing rare, unreleased recordings, and never-before-released music by Terry Jennings, Richard Maxfield, Éliane Radigue, Alison Knowles, and Curtis. All that I did not understand, Story of an afternoon and Under Antonio Ceriani / Tutto quello che non ho capito, Storia di un pomeriggio e Sotto Antonio Ceriani

These three songs are constructed in a very similar way, practically recording short guitar patterns and creating loops by re-editing them and processing them with the same outboard. They were also the easiest tracks of the selection to restore as they were kept on multi-track format. All three tracks are directly inspired by Pietro Puccio's paintings. Between the distressing expectation of Under Antonio Ceriani and the lazy and lukewarm pace of the Story of an afternoon, my favorite has always been All that I did not understand, with that mass of unknown emerging from the depths of the canvas and swallowing all the forms and colors.

Questi tre brani sono costruiti in modo molto simile, in pratica registrando dei brevi pattern di chitarra e creando loop rimaneggiandoli e passandoli dagli stessi macchinari. Sono stati anche i più facili della raccolta da restaurare in quanto tenuti in multi-traccia. Tutti e tre i brani sono ispirati direttamente da dei quadri di Pietro Puccio. Tra l'attesa desolante di Sotto Antonio Ceriani e il pigro e tiepido incedere di Storia di un pomeriggio, il mio preferito è sempre stato Tutto quello che non ho capito, con quella massa di ignoto che emergeva dal fondo della tela e ingoiava le forme e i colori.

840 is a London-based concert series curated by the composers Alex Nikiporenko and James Luff. The series is dedicated to providing a platform for new experimental and minimal music. Each concert focuses on a particular chamber instrumentation, showcasing a diversity of works by living composers. 

840 takes its name from Erik Satie's inscription in Vexations - "In order to play the theme 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, and in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities." 

Composer Nicholas Peters co-founded and co-curated the series from 2014 until 2017.
