Roam Recordings is known for representing the West Coast sound, spreading it out for all the world to hear. In that spirit, the label's latest offering comes from Seattle-based producer Tom Butcher, better known as Codebase, with a remix by longtime heavy hitter Pezzner (Systematic Recordings, Freerange Records). The EP captures a range of styles but keeps with the theme by which it's named: Acid Nouveau. The EP slows in pace as it progresses, but never eases up on the intensity. "The Last Time" starts things off with some acid of the moody, electro funk variety -- Egyptian Lover would approve -- completed by smooth, disillusioned vocal inflections from Codebase himself. The title track, "Acid Nouveau," continues this theme but takes it in a dubbier direction with additional heavy play on the pitch wheel of a bendy synth. "Electric Tea Garden" is a heavy, '80s disco chugger that is perfect for transporting listeners to another time, but through the hindsight of a modern sheen. Finishing off the release, Pezzner gives "The Last Time" a banging rework with extra bounce in the drums and a slurry of vocal effects, adding a complimentary head trip to the prerequisite ass shaking. This is one of those records primed to cross-pollinate many sets, offering standalone or transition pieces.

San Francisco bay area house music label Rouse Records kicks off with a bang, revealing a single that’s fully loaded with legendary talent. The incomparable Roy Davis Jr. is joined by accomplished vocalist J.R. Jordan for the deep, rhythmic, and acid-flavored “Take You There”. J.R.’s vocal delivery smoothly recalls classic late night excursions as the keys and pads build, leading to a liquid acid line. The production is pure Roy Davis Jr., giving the dance floor a blissful moment to savor. “Take You There” is also a Chicago affair … a couple of the city’s other house music legends join the single with remix treatments. Gene Farris (Farris Wheel, Cajual) delivers a rolling, high calibre version that will give the nightclub speakers a workout. San Francisco electronic music mainstays Hardkiss have released double remix EPs of “It's Right", the fourth single off their sentimental spring album release 1991. The album was hailed as "one of the most important EDM records of the last ten years" by Magnetic Magazine while Datatransmission.co.uk called it "a modern dance classic." For the occasion, Hardkiss have reached into their own backyard to pull from Bay Area family on one side and, on the other, contributors from around the globe further extending their tribe - dual offerings aimed at delivering a diverse collection of remixes.

The San Francisco Family Remixes features different versions from David Harness, Freakpusher, Robbie Hardkiss, and Gavin Hardkiss while The Global Family Remixes includes a host of international artists from Africa, Europe, and the USA including Stephane Deschezeaux, rAin, N'Dinga Gaba, Constar, and, once again, Gavin Hardkiss.

For early digestion, a six track sampler merges the two EPs, showcasing a few highlights by the Hardkiss brothers, Harness, rAin, N'Dinga Gaba, and Constar. The holistic effort from this cast of characters is hard to pin down on a release that is at times dramatic, playfully pop-sensible, and tapping into something cosmic … but mostly downright funky and unpredictable. Nothing less is to be expected when bringing together the contrasting mix of San Francisco dance music legends, rising producers with their own take on the South African sounds, and a lone New Yorker from the Brooklyn borough. It must be said that this record means a lot to the Hardkiss brothers, with Robbie having re-sung the original vocals for his retouch and Gavin reportedly remixing the song 'at least 100 times' to get to his latest incarnation of it. In their hands, the final outcome is understandably bound with love and care.

The prolific Manchester-based artist known as Robot Needs Oil has been found covertly recording downtempo, reggae, and hip hop fueled beats under the curious name of My Neighbour Is. Buddha Fly is the latest album for the Cold Busted label under this moniker and it serves as an immersive downtempo / hip-hop hybrid. Half pitched-up and pungently stringy, half laid-back and enveloped by a smoky haze, the album could be the soundtrack to a fable … and a funky fable, at that. This split sees the release's ten tracks teeter on the edge of trip-hop at times while flirting with antique sounds from days gone by at others. EXPOSURE is the long-awaited debut album from Reverse Commuter, a project of the multi-faceted Los Angeles-based producer Kenneth James Gibson. Featuring collaborations as well as solo productions, this kaleidoscopic set of songs gives a bird’s eye view into the influences and techniques that make Gibson’s music a special experience. Reverse Commuter joins [a]pendics.shuffle and the band Bell Gardens – among other pseudonymous projects – as distinctive musical activities of Kenneth Gibson, with Reverse Commuter showcasing an adventurous and song-focused electronic music sound. From the first track, the subdued and haunting “Take It”, the design becomes clear … EXPOSURE presents a sonic world that exists to get inside one’s skin. Kelly Johnston affirms this with her alluring vocal contribution to two of the album’s more evocative tracks: “Still Voice Convincing” and “Icarus”. EXPOSURE’s seduction completely takes over on “Whispers In”, featuring Douglas J. McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb, Recoil) providing a masterful vocal performance over Gibson’s pulsating, otherworldly soundscape and rhythm. The thing about colder climates is that they allow inhabitants a mass amount of time to stay indoors and work on quality music. "All The Way", the latest single on DeepWit Recordings, was birthed in Iceland and comes from Jonbjorn, one of the artists behind that country's stand out label, Lagaffe Tales. As a naturally talented producer with a knack for simple hooks that make repeat listens a must, Jonbjorn crafts an all-too-rare-these-days ear worm that leaves an insatiable hunger for more. "All The Way" is warm and skittery with a fat kick and equally heavyweight sub bass. Increasing the heat, the label follows it up with an inextinguishable rework by Junktion who delivers pure, one-man-disco-band fire. Between his label Outplay, various appearances on vinyl imprints, and an outstandingly deep sound, this Dutchman shows a massive amount of poise with a remix whose quality can't be over-exaggerated. To round out the single, Lagaffe Tales' other half, Viktor Birgiss, shapes the original into its most housey form yet with an addictive, dance-friendly and melodically moving piece of ice capped bliss. With this release, DeepWit has put its foot down on what the label thinks deep house should be, in pursuit of quality and unbothered by others' chase for trendier sounds.
