Singaporean music producer, DJ, and songwriter, Krickz releases his first single in a series of projects lined up this 2014.

Although renowned for his bass-heavy electronic music production, the talented 21-year old has developed a strong repertoire for symphonizing his signature sound with progressive vocal hooks, which he also writes. This next addition to his official discography, Vortex, is already finding its way in the playlists of his fellow DJs across the city.

The song is the result of his collaborative effort with one of Singapore’s most critically-acclaimed rap lyricists and winner of 2013’s NEA Eco Music Challenge, Enero. Completing the trifecta, on main vocals, is up-and-coming music composer, Jaz Patel.

It is common for the untrained listeners of electronic dance music to anticipate and impatiently ask, “When is the drop coming?” but if it holds true that the melody is what attracts the listeners to a song and that it is the lyrics that makes them stay, then get your repeat button ready.

The lyricism remains on point from the chorus to the verses. Both which ‘opens the curtains’ for the ‘drop’ that Krickz never fails to amuse new listeners with.

The mood is set early on with the melancholic melody of the chorus over the piano-driven tune. Krickz production skills shines from how he sonically takes you on a journey seamlessly like it was a Broadway musical, from the first act to the next, and to the climatic end.

Accompanying the release of the single are remixes by some of the most creative talents from veteran Jean Reiki, upcoming producer Myrne, to 6-time DJ Battle champion Perk Pietrek.

"Go" was interesting to write because it was inspired by a friend of mine who had been going through a fairly abusive relationship, and while it was supposed to be about her, it really wound up being about me. During the worst times of this situation, she often turned to me for advice, comfort, and as an outlet to vent. I found myself becoming emotionally involved with the situation, and, therefore, with her.     

The first verse was geared more towards writing from her perspective. I was trying to place myself in her shoes, and tell her side of the story. I accessed the feelings of desperation, depression, and reoccurring rejection that I’m familiar with. I thought of the struggle we go through when we’re fighting for someone or something that won’t fight for us, and wanted to try to capture that struggle in a song.    

However, as the writing process continued, so did our involvements. I found myself interested in someone who was clearly, abundantly interested in someone else. While I knew I was the far better of the two options, she clung to someone that repeatedly ignored, hurt, and abandoned her. This touched on a common issue for me, the feeling that our outcomes do not necessarily reflect our efforts. It made me feel the floating feeling I often do, and I became angry. That was where the second verse was derived from. I felt a juxtaposition of myself and this girl. I had now become the one vying for attention, and not having it properly reciprocated. I was the one reaching out. I was the one trying. I was the one feeling ignored.    

Go embodies that feeling. Not solely romantically, but in all things we do. Our work, our passion, and our love. The feeling that we can try so hard, and invest so much of ourselves, and never receive that which we know we deserve. It’s about wondering if you’re enough, and knowing you’re enough, and how others sometimes make us do a little of both.
