Hot off releasing his "Skin and Bone" EP on Stil Vor Talent, Marlon Hoffstadt has been exciting a lot of ears around the industry as of late. 2012 saw him really take off into his own garnering attention from the likes of OFF Recordings and heading up A&R duties at WellDone! Music. Steve Graham is no stranger to the ever changing tides of the underground music scene. From his initial stomping grounds in Tampa, Florida to his current home here in New York, Steve has always managed to leave his footprint on the scene wherever he has been. In 2004, Graham achieved critical successes during his stint in Tampa. His time there culminated in organizing some of the most amazing sunset boat cruises with guests including the likes of Jay Tripwire, Naveen G, and Dory. Having now relocated to New York, Graham has surrounded himself around some powerful entities and talent including Desyn Masiello’s Faciendo label, San Francisco’s Listed Productions and Cityfox NY. Hailing from Russia, Julia Govor (Get Physical, Visionquest) has put her stamp over multiple facets of music and entertainment. After making an impressive impact as a music journalist in the scene, the natural progression of her talents has led her to be a globetrotting DJ and has already made rounds as a buzzing upcoming producer. Back in March 2014, SoundPark ran a feature on one of the most successful events in Cairo, Egypt. We were lucky to have Hisham Zahran take the helm for the audio and his debut has been one of our favorites from our entire catalog since. Hisham is a master story teller. His sound is patient, intelligent, and soothing. If you have yet to hear him, today is the day to change that. Now that Burning Man has passed on by and we look back at the week that was, we wanted to find out what makes our favorite daytime celebration on the playa tick. San Francisco-based Pink Mammoth has been providing an incredibly satisfying dance floor for patrons who want to move their feet on the desert dust for the better part of eleven years. That’s nothing to gloss over. Pink Mammoth is known as a beacon for top shelf music and they consistently curate some of the industry’s best performers to help them craft the perfect vibe. There is an unmistakable feeling of warmth and excitement when pulling your bike up to the camp that is hard to find anywhere else. You’re greeted with smiling faces everywhere and everyone’s spirits are high.

The most fascinating aspect about Pink Mammoth is that with the rising notoriety of Burning Man itself as well as it becoming a premier stage for underground performers, they have consistently stayed true to their roots and regularly give to their community back home. They are an important piece in the fabric of the dance culture in San Francisco and should be considered a benchmark for how to do things right. SoundPark sat down with some of the core members (Jonathan Will, Derek Hena, Rob Adelmann and Zach Walker) to discuss what Pink Mammoth means not only during the one week in the desert, but all year round.

Seth is foremost a violinist who really started to engage himself with more experimental sides of electronic music. Here at SoundPark, we've always felt strongly about showcasing brands along with the people behind these concepts that contribute to their regional nightlife culture in a real way. It’s a collective process that involves the coordination of plenty of people to put it together. Artists need to make incredible music. Labels need to release this music. Both management and booking agencies work in tandem ensuring their artists are performing at the best shows possible. The event organizer needs to have the vision to pair amazing music with an equally amazing setting. The venue needs to offer incredible sound, a place with a captivating atmosphere, where people feel welcome. The ones who do this right create wonderful experiences that will leave the audience simply buzzing. Music can be an incredibly rich experience that can affect you in powerful ways. When we first discovered Patrick Muller aka Patlac, it was an unbelievable combination of all these elements. This is why we hold this tastemaker in such a high regard. His sound is an amazing blend of punchy hypnotic hooks that share both melodic and groovy overtones. His performances are always exciting journeys that carry energy but never lose that delicate balance of harmony from track to track. It’s always a challenge to summarize over a decade of work within the music industry. There are heaps of challenges both big and small one has to handle and embrace to remain fluid enough sway with the current of change. One of the biggest correlations that every accomplished artist we feature over SoundPark expresses is an acute level of patience and resolve to never lose sight of their artistic expression in its purest form. With fifteen years under his belt, Los Angeles based Michael Joseph’s accomplishments span across a variety of genres and pseudonyms. 

As SAAND, his melancholic audio tales are no doubt intended to motivate a floor over the course of an evening. The sulky textures that flow through SAAND’s palette add depth while simultaneously controlling the intensity of the music. SAAND consistently demonstrates control over the pace of his music and this skill will allow any melancholic shade of house music to flourish with enthusiasm. SAAND’s ability has amassed a punchy resume of performances that cover some lustrous festivals including Lightning in a Bottle, Woogie Weekend, and Mexico’s BPM among others. His releases are found riddled across affluent labels that are also pushing the envelope in their own way. Favorites including Dilate, Motek, and Union Jack can all be found highlighting SAAND’s work. 

Outside of Joseph’s musical prowess, his contribution to the southern California based music publication Music is 4 Lovers shouldn’t be short changed. As the Director and Senior Editor, Joseph regularly exhibits years of music knowledge to the outlet which has helped advance its reach far beyond its California walls. Music Is 4 Lovers has distinguished itself as a prominent independent music publication and Joseph’s influence is clear. Frankly, this is a great example of what separates an artist from a taste maker. Since its inception, SoundPark has become a home for tastemakers who have powered through their own personal and professional challenges and were able to imagine, envision, and create something beautiful. The journey is a difficult one and one that has no clear cut path. Yet in the dense music jungle of New York, it takes time and patience to navigate. 

Over the last two years, Ray Zuniga has firmly established himself as a tastemaker not only among his peers but with some of present day New York’s finest institutions. (ReSolute, Blkmarket Membership, and Cityfox) Zuniga’s residency held at Brooklyn’s Output has become a staple for music enthusiasts in New York’s underground and is touted as one of the most musically rich nights in the city. His palette of sound regularly melds the finest in house, techno, electronica, and disco into a sexy soulful affair that will take even the biggest music heads for a spin.

Outside of telling audio tales, Zuniga is also co-owner of Touch of Class Records, an imprint that is dedicated to presenting timeless records that can be appreciated by any connoisseur of music. There are three principle components to the work of Toronto based Duo, Nature of Music. There is a sense of patience that their music exudes that really allows their sound to ‘breathe’ in the framework of their sets and their production work. Strings play out, the delays roll off into the distance, and the reverb swells and holds you.

To form this, the duo combines both live performance and DJing into a sophisticated blend that utilizes drum machine rhythm pieces alongside a mesmerizing palette of melodies sprinkled with hints of acapella and spoken word. Rich atmospheric pads combined with string ensembles help create deep harmonies that balance together to play equal rolls in the duo’s theater of sound.

Playdate New York's Terron Darby has been an incredible force behind the scenes, in the studio, and on the decks for nearly two decades. Darby has designed professional high end studios for an esteemed list of performers and organizations that include everything from Moby to Vice Media, HBO, and NASA among others. He is also one of the original Avid instructors for their education department and has also taught aspiring musicians of all flavors at Full Sail University. It's special to have someone who has contributed so much to the growth of other eager musicians take the reign themselves. Currently, Darby has set in motion a mysterious new vinyl imprint that's a unique ode to the relationship between music and art. This label will reflect how layer after layer, Darby's music constructs a warm, intelligent vibe filled with rich-brimming strings and beautiful swelling bass lines that articulate what creating and spinning deeper shades of house music is all about. Over the course of two decades, Andrew Cole aka Luv*Jam has carved a unique niche as a tastemaker of the highest regard not only with his effort as a selector but as a conservator of vinyl culture.  As a selector, Luv*Jam has graced booths and stages far and wide including Fabric - London, Tresor - Berlin, and Space – Ibiza (which he was a resident of for nearly 12 years) among an otherwise absurd assortment of venues  that span across the world’s finest clubbing and festival institutions.

As a shepherd of vinyl culture, Cole is the proprietor of four vinyl labels that delve into a space where enthusiasts seek and ultimately collect individually numbered/stamped vinyl records featuring unique artwork that sell in limited quantities. Based out of a small township in Durban, South Africa called KwaDabeka K, Vicmari illustrates a fascinating touch when it comes to weaving the threads of delicate soundscapes together. What we have is a peaceful take on ambient fused jazz and dub house with dashes of uplifting spoken word that has settled as an important part of the vibe and aesthetic of contemporary South African dance music. You'll be able to hear original Vicmari pieces, special edits, and good ol' Jazz improvisation to take us all home during this audio tale. Blind Jacks Journey, Crow Castle Cuts, The Legend of Gelert, and Nip7 express forward thinking music concepts and trust its listeners to use more than their sense of hearing to uncover and interpret its mysterious connection to the world. For this follow up tale, our man slings together ninety nine cuts of quintessential nippers from the farthest reaches of this storytellers seemingly infinite catalog never before featured in any of his recordings. Spanning a five and a half hour sonic trip, this kind of outing is why he sits in our catalog as one of our most distinguished storytellers, hands down.

Something truly special has been brewing out in one of the finest corners of the South Africa underground. Thankfully we’ve been spending quality time with some of the finest purveyors of deep, soulful grooves in the region and what our ears came across for all intents and purposes was mind bending. For the heads and for the enthusiast, please make sure to take time to acquaint yourselves with the sounds of "Future Bantu" - a tastemaker's exploration of raw, culturally rooted rhythms displayed in a buoyant, kinetic outing. Featuring flurries of percussive rhythm management pieces, Buddah frames his signature into sophisticated arrangements of sultry, dust-speckled soul. To further explore this unique sound aesthetic, one can check out the wonderful effort, Super Black Tapes which features a tight knit collection of mix-tapes from the visionaries of Future Bantu. We've been anticipating this tale for quite some time now so without further ado, hailing from the future, Fred Buddah makes his very special SoundPark debut.

Initially making his debut on one of our favorite efforts Blind Jacks Journey, Istanbul based talent Aleksandir is getting a lot of love for his ability to lay down unquestionably silky records. Surely there is a wispy-smoke like charm to his music. Most notably, he displays a beautifully patient touch on the keys that diffuses into an arrangement of warm sounds and tasteful harmonies. Bespoke Musik doesn't care how the music is made, they care that the music is honest. Over the course of the last two years they have consistently strung together a fantastic line up of Artists to perform at their events but what makes their events so great? Is it the intimate spaces? Maybe the low-lights? How about the beautiful candles lighting up the DJ booth? Either way, the people at Bespoke definitely get it. The vibe is always good and we found ourselves right in the middle of it. Bespoke recently brought in the Suol Music family for a wicked tour through out the US and they didn't disappoint. We fast forward just a little bit further into the night where Daniel Bortz took over the decks. He closed out this beautiful evening of music in New York flawlessly. If this is the first time you have heard of Acid District don’t worry. This Spanish Duo formed only last year and have already  played along side of the likes of Edu Imbernon, AFFKT, NiCe7, Loco Dice and many more. They get charted regularly by the same DJs and have a knack for having their music played on a variety of radio programs. You can find their releases on Suruba, Eklektisch, and Natural High among other labels. They’re popping up on a lot of people’s radar throughout 2013 so it made sense to bring them for a visit through the SoundPark Playground. Welcome to Summer! <3
