R/S/M/Z - A Simple Equation is an audiovisual project conceived by media artist Maike Zimmermann and guitarist Rainer Schütz/Noisseville.
It presents a unique sound combination of electric guitar/bass, the hybrid autoharp (prepared, analog and digital; played by Maike Zimmermann) and voice (also Maike Zimmermann). Raw noise und filigree, deep sound textures evolve into an improvised sonic dynamic by which the autoharp builds looped structures and the guitar/bass weaves a dramatic thread through it. Vocal elements are incorporated as an emotive element. These structural layers develop into a tapestry of sound emanating narratives. At times the sound exudes distorted screeching, at times deep drones and fragile harmonics.
The haunting music simultaneously forms the basis for video projections, addressing themes of (urban) space and memory. Psychogeographic video wanderings (London, Berlin, New York) are reflecting our lived experience with the city. They are interwoven with abstract elements that act as a signifying temporal imprint of our relationship with architectural and natural environments. The video footage consists of contemporary images alternating with archival footage shifting temporal, spacial and imaginary layers. The urban space is experienced by us and other city dwellers countless times, so memories overlap. They become our stories and the stories of others, to which we respond differently at various times. The sound is emotional enhancer by adding textures in dialogue with the images, either enhancing or opposing them but even so bolting the overall experiences together. 
An abundance of auditory and visual nuances will open up that the audience will engage with on all levels...

R/S/M/Z - A Simple Equation ist ein audiovisuelles Projekt, das von der Medienkünstlerin Maike Zimmermann und Gitarrist Rainer Schütz/Noisseville konzipiert wurde. Es präsentiert eine einzigartige Klangkombination aus E-Gitarre/Bass, der Hybrid-Autoharp (prepariert, analog und digital; von Maike Zimmermann gespielt) und Stimme (ebenfalls Maike Zimmermann). Raw Noise und filigrane, tiefe Klangtexturen entwickeln sich zu einer improvisierten akustischen Dynamik, bei der die Autoharp geloopte Strukturen aufbaut und die Gitarre/Bass einen dramatischen Faden durch sie hindurchwebt. Stimm-Elemente werden als emotionsgeladenes Element mit eingearbeitet. Diese Texturen entfalten sich zu einem Klangteppich, der vielschichtige narrative Ebenen verknüpft. 
Mal erklingt verzerrtes Gekreische, mal tiefe Drones und zerbrechliche Harmonien.
Die eindringliche Musik bildet gleichzeitig die Grundlage für eine visuelle Transformation in Form einer Echtzeit-Videoprojektionen, die jeweils Themen des (urbanen) Raums und Erinnerung aufgreifen. Psychogeographische Videowanderungen (London, Berlin, New York) reflektieren unsere gelebte Erfahrung mit der Stadt. Sie sind mit abstrakten Elementen verwoben, die als zeitlicher Index unserer Beziehung zu architektonischen und natürlichen Umgebungen dienen. 
Das Videomaterial besteht aus zeitgenössischen Bildern, das sich mit Archivmaterial abwechselt. 
Der städtische Raum wird von uns und anderen Stadtbewohnern unzählige Male erlebt, so dass sich Erinnerungen überlagern. Sie werden zu unseren Geschichten, zu den Geschichten der anderen, auf die wir zu verschiedenen Zeiten unterschiedlich reagieren. Das Projekt erforscht die Überschneidungen von imaginären und realen Orten. 
Der Ton ist ein emotionaler Verstärker, indem er im Dialog mit den Bildern Texturen hinzufügt, die sie entweder verstärken oder ihnen entgegenwirken, aber auf jeden Fall die Gesamterfahrungen zusammenhalten. 
Eine Fülle von auditiven und visuellen Nuancen wird sich auftun, auf die sich das Publikum auf allen Ebenen einlassen kann...

Hans Tammen creates music that has been described as an alien world of bizarre textures and a journey through the land of unending sonic operations. He produces rapid-fire juxtapositions of radically contrastive and fascinating sounds, with micropolyphonic timbres and textures, aggressive sonic eruptions, but also quiet pulses and barely audible noises - through means of his ENDANGERED GUITAR and interactive software programming, by working with the room itself, and, as a critic observed, with his "...fingers stuck in a high voltage outlet". Signal To Noise called his works "...a killer tour de force of post-everything guitar damage", All Music Guide recommended him: "...clearly one of the best experimental guitarists to come forward during the 1990s."

His numerous projects include site-specific performances and collaborative efforts with dance, light, video, and theatre, utilizing technology from planetarium projectors to guitar robots and disklavier pianos. He received a Fellowship from the New York Foundation of the Arts (NYFA) in the category Digital/Electronic Arts in 2009 for the ENDANGERED GUITAR - a hybrid guitar/software instrument used to control interactive live sound processing. His THIRD EYE ORCHESTRA open form compositions for large ensembles and live sound processing are inspired by Earle Brown's Available Forms, and based on numerous scored "building blocks" that are constantly rearranged when performed.

Founded as a not-for-profit organization by artists in 1977, Harvestworks has helped a generation of artists create new works using technology. Our mission is to support the creation and presentation of art works achieved through the use of new and evolving technologies.
