Inspired by Detroit techno plus the cutting edge Footwork, UK Bass and Jungle that her label platforms, Souci (she/her) cultivates a style which is ever-evolving. In Berlin she co-runs the label Raiders, has a monthly radio show on Refuge Worldwide as well as a regular showcase on HÖR Berlin. Currently she is the resident of the Berlin-Detroit connection.

The talented Australian born and raised in the tropics of Laos, Thailand and Bali, Sophie McAlister has been a regular fixture in various music scenes since 2016. Equally comfortable in the realms of house and disco as she is in the sounds of jungle, bass and techno, McAlister is an ambassador for stylistic pluralism. It’s said often, but she really does it all.

The theme for today’s music selection is songs that invoke memories of moments and people.

To be honest, given the current state of violence, hate, and ongoing genocide in the world, it feels somewhat surreal to share the first episode of the Local Strangers radio/cast. It can be difficult to find joy, smile, or celebrate the music that evokes beautiful memories in our lives when we witness the tragic events not far from where we record this. However, in our eyes, music serves as a portal to better times and can remind us of the good moments in these dark times. Music often provides solace for those overwhelmed by a sense of doom, which is why we believe it's the right moment to share this today.

Local Strangers aspires to be a platform for WOMXN who wish to learn and participate in the music, nightlife, and event industries by offering them space to explore, learn, and thrive, something that we aren't always granted in these male-dominated industries.

Bertie is a DJ, producer, party promoter and radio host based in Naarm. Expect an accordant amalgamation of disco, house, acid, prog and genre blenders across the wider spectrum of dance music. Her musical journeys are exactly that – a guided exploring from start to finish.

This cultivated sound has seen her become a discernible force in the underground music scene, performing at some of Australia's biggest festivals including Strawberry Fields, Pitch Arts & Music, Sugar Mountain, Gaytimes and Beyond the Valley, and support the likes of CC:DISCO!, Denis Sulta, Bradley Zero, Kornel Kovacs and Patrick Holland.

Outside of performing she shares her ever-expanding collection of laid back groovers via her show ‘Cup of Bertea’ on Skylab Radio, as well as regularly appearing on Hope St Radio. She co-curates an event series ‘Club Aqueous’, prioritising artists from underrepresented backgrounds. And she produces dance-floor ready house music, with her single 'Carabiner' released on Phenomena Records in November 2023; the first from her debut EP set for release early 2024.

CONFIDE IN BERTIE (013) (Live @ The Gasometer – 10.12.2023)

took a little breather after the end of the, I believe we can say, turbulent (🥵) year of 2023..... read on for a story.

in collaboration of my own beloved team of pos and the talented Amsterdam locals representing taped rhythm, we had been working for weeks to build a big nye event in Amsterdam Noord. 2 days in advance our location was cancelled. we swapped the entire event to a club, the other side, within a day. with regards to the program, that finn, tom, and me had built separately and with different visions for 2 warehouses, in the mids of the chaos we were faced with a challenge to combine our two programs into one. due to everyone’s resilience, flexibility, openness, and creativity, no artist had to be cancelled and the combined program could not have been more successful.

the combined event was extra meaningful in so many ways. It brought along new perspectives, so much power, and many lessons learned. a packed dancefloor at 9 am reflected all of that and we do it for you. to let go of what this year has brought. to inspire. to create. to help. thank u thank u thank u forever for all your hard work, my deepest respect to all of you, the boys of taped, pos, the amazing team of the other side, everyone that joined, and every single person close to us that stood by our side and helped out when we needed it most. it felt powerful. 

finn and me ended up playing the cutest and meaningful b2b representing both our teams, warming up the long night and morning ahead. originally I was scheduled to play for two hours in our own warehouse, and I had been preparing for weeks to create a specific experience for everyone that would have been present. I decided to record (a part of the) mix to listen back to. It reflects a transformative advancement into the realms of comfort. where chaos meets comfort, when you need it the most. read the titles. how do they make you feel? and then 2024…. i wish and deeply hope for you to receive all the support, strength, power, motivation, and inspiration you need for the year to come.
