PREMIERE: Polanski-Stomping Of The High Mind [ OCCULTISTS ]

Forming a full cycle, Polanski returns to the Instinct Series with a dance floor-ready yet an introspective selection of works. Each of the three tracks were built for an extended period of time, between 2022/23 in his London studio. The final product weaves-in a mixture of raw modular sound-bites coupled with pulsating rhythms. The extensive use of field recordings form heavy atmospheres that are often accompanied by his own voice, sound objects and underlying drones. On occasions the fluctuating sounds have outbursts of sonic tantrums, activating a cerebral response. A state where rhythms are not obliged to strictly follow the tracks and transients are bent without any rules. Matt Edwards and multifaceted artist Patrick Mason team up as SRVD with debut release entitled ‘ELEVATE’ dropping on Rekids this August. 

Whether as Radio Slave or his various other monikers, Matt Edwards is one of electronic music’s most consistent and innovative artists. Ever since his early reinterpretations of Kylie Minogue and New Order, Edwards has continually commanded respect as a producer and in-demand remixer, whilst as a label owner his Rekids imprint is undoubtedly one of house and techno’s most influential platforms. 

Meanwhile, Patrick Mason continues to conquer the fashion world; a devout club kid and gifted creative turning heads as an outstanding art director, illustrator and model, whose extensive artistic talents include a unique and compelling voice destined for dancefloors. 

SRVD’s story begins when the pair met in Panorama Bar, which soon led to Edwards and Mason hanging out at the studio and later evolved into improvised performances in Berlin’s club scene and beyond. ‘ELEVATE’ perfectly captures the raw spirit and vibe of their live show, with whispering vocals ushering in precision kicks and piercing stabs until Mason’s mesmerising voice comes fully into play. 

An homage to the New York vogue scene and a huge hit at Panorama Bar - where the pair have set the house on fire with three unannounced shows so far this year - ‘NASTY’ is a syncopated, bass-driven monster of a cut complete with infectious claps and metallic effects.

Grammy-nominated producer Nic Fanciulli joins Radio Slave’s Rekids this February with two thumping cuts entitled ‘Understand’.

Having appeared before as a remixer of Radio Slave’s seminal ‘Grindhouse’ in 2012, Saved Records founder Nic Fanciulli now finally joins the Rekids imprint for the first time with original material. Highly regarded for holding residencies in some of the biggest super clubs in the world like Ibiza’s Space and Pacha, the longstanding British DJ is also responsible for four legendary BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes. His production distinction spans to a revered Grammy nomination at the age of only 26 for Best Recording Remix as part of Buick Project, to his acclaimed debut album 'My Heart' with collaborations alongside the likes of British Rock legend Damon Albarn.

The title track opens the release with submarine-like bleeps chiming over a mysterious voice repeating “understand”, while a growling bass dives deep beneath a thundering drum groove. On the flip, ‘Where U At’ features mesmerising vocal cries that flutter between upbeat stabs and bouncy percussion that expertly bolsters a driving low end.

Fanciulli’s arrival on Rekids follows a strong 2018 for the label featuring appearances from Butch, Mark Broom, Nocow, Sebo K and SRVD (Matt Edwards & Patrick Mason).

Very few electronic music artists stand the test of time but German electro pioneer and visionary, Anthony Rother, is one of them. Whether running labels like Psi49Net, Stahl Industries and Datapunk or working alongside the likes of Sven Väth, DJ Hell and Kraftwerk’s Karl Bartos, Rother’s legacy stands tall. Having made recent appearances on DVS1’s Mistress or Danny Daze’s OMNIDISC, Rother now connects with Stranger In The Night, joining a tight roster of luminaries including King Britt, Fred P and label boss Radio Slave.

‘We Are The Future’ opens the package with sci-fi synths, a decaying vocal and arpeggiated highs, before ‘Super Future Metropolis’ continues the theme with ultramodern vocoding and industrial drum patterns. Torgue smashes his way onto Trialz with 3 original dance floor crushers, that delivers in a signature Trialz vibe. Then we continue our voyage into the unknown with two very different remixes.  Today’s premiere is from London-based DJ and events curator Polanski. It is the DJ practice that influences Polanski’s remixing technique. Occasionally messy and disjointed, he sees his remix as a journey, where often you’ll find yourself entering through one gate of a sonic world but leaving it in another dimension. Never bound to one musical style, whether as DJ or remixer he tries to bridge the gap between the groovy and more experimental styles of dance music.

After remixing Ireen Amnes on Instruments of Discipline, Polanski continues with his A-Version concept. The concept borrows idea from the disco ‘version’. When some of the first 12” singles were pressed in the early days of club music (New York) they often included B-side remix from a local, well known club resident DJ. Some of them simply layered drum machine loops over elements of the original. With time, as the concept became more popular, those versions had often turned into epic 12-minute long, standalone compositions. 

For Polanski year 2020 marks twenty years “at the controls of the dance floor”. Never bound to one musical style, whether as DJ, remixer or solo producer, Polanski tries to bridge the gap between the groovy and more experimental styles of dance music.

The talented duo hailing originally from Italy yet currently based out of London, Tapefeed. They are the resident DJs of Superstition at Village Underground in London and Co-owners of the Tales Collective label. 

Recently their return on Metempsychosis Records with a controversial EP which includes two powerful remixes by Answer Code Request and Killawatt.  Taking inspiration from a famous quote of Eldridge Cleaver (writer and political activist) “They use force to make you do what the deciders have decided you must do” which was also repeated many times from Rage Against The Machine's frontman Zack De La Rocha before the start of their live performances, the EP's raw and industrial sound is an invite to raise awareness to a time of worldwide disconnection and conflict.

This mix comes from Red Ophis, the new alias of our good friend Tonia Nee who played at MASS001 all the way back in 2018 with Andromeda, delivering an electrifying B2B set that baptised our night in perfect style. 

The founder of Synthapise, a non-profit event for animals' rights, recently became part of the MOTZ collective. Usually known for harsh industrial techno, as demonstrated in her previous MASS sessions mix, like a snake that sheds its skin, she now widens the scope of her sounds to give space to anything that resonates.

UNCAGE label owner Marco Faraone is back on Rekids with three massive soulful cuts entitled ‘True Love EP’.

Hailing from Tuscany, Faraone has risen to become one of Italy’s leading house and techno artists over the last fifteen years. When not performing at the likes of Awakenings, Caprices, Tomorrowland and Kappa FuturFestival, the producer has released on leading labels like Ovum, Drumcode and Be As One. Since debuting on Rekids two years ago he’s become a notable fixture on the Berlin-based imprint, dropping numerous releases including his sophomore album, and he returns again now in fine form.

Opening the release in a big way, ‘True Love’ is built on galloping kicks, rattling shakers and a murky bass throb whilst a distorted vocal sings the track title. A cacophony of percussion then joins deep synths in ‘Want Me’ before introducing a powerful diva vox, leading into ‘Safari’ with its bubbling effects, piercing stabs and swinging hats.
