what once was can be again is inspired by the rapid degradation of the planet’s coral reefs. The piece follows a programmatic form, in which we rewind through time—starting with the sparse starkness of our current reefs and working our way back to a time in which the reef systems were full of the diversity and richness of life. We have the ability to restore these reefs—to rewind our planet’s own history and renew what once was. But it will take great efforts, great divestments, and great investments in order for this to happen.

There are many things we can do to contribute to the conservation of our coral reefs. The first and easiest way is to learn about our reefs, what they do, why they're important, and what's happening to them. Educating ourselves is the first step in creating positive change for our coral reef environments. You also don't have to be a biologist, or someone deeply involved in conservation to help make a change. Simple things like limiting how much water you use when you shower or do the dishes or not relying on single-use plastic are small changes that can make a huge difference. According to the EPA, some things you can do every day to make a difference include recycling and disposing of trash properly, minimizing use of fertilizers, using environmentally-friendly modes of transportation, reducing stormwater runoff by collecting rainwater, saving energy by turning off lights or opting for energy-efficient appliances, avoiding purchasing life coral and purchasing marine aquarium organisms that have been collected in a sustainable way, and spreading the word about our reefs and what's happening.

Donations are also a great way to contribute if you're able to. Groups like the Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire, Coral Reef Alliance, Coral Restoration Foundation, and so many others are great places to donate money to help maintain ongoing conservation efforts to help restore the world's reefs. The biggest and easiest thing that everyone can do is be informed on coral reefs and their significance to our oceans. The more people who know and care about these issues, the more help and support available to make positive change for our planet.
