Pianist Ben Thornewill, guitarist Tommy Siegel, and drummer Jesse Kristin first came together in 2003 as undergraduate students at George Washington University. Sporting a quirky, brainy pop sound that took its cues from the likes of Ben Folds and They Might Be Giants, the three logged several years together under a different name, The Sunday Mail, before re-branding themselves Jukebox the Ghost in 2005. Following graduation, they released their debut album, Let Live & Let Ghosts, and relocated to Philadelphia. 

Boosted by positive reviews, Jukebox the Ghost began touring in earnest, first as the opening act for one of their biggest influences (Ben Folds) and then alongside some of their pop-minded contemporaries (Tally Hall, Jenny Owen Youngs, Nightmare of You). By early 2010, they’d signed with Yep Roc Records and gone into the studio with producer Peter Katis, known for his work with atmospheric rock bands like Interpol and the National. With Katis adding a darker element to the band’s sound, Jukebox the Ghost released their second album, Everything Under the Sun, in September. -- by Andrew Leahey (AllMusic)

For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Helmut Ebritsch is best known for his work as one half of Klartraum, alongside partner in crime Nadja Lind as well as for his work as Hatikvah with vocalist Florian Schirmacher. Now he is serving up a full-
length album under his own name, the stunning ‘Souls Transmitting’ that proves his wide-ranging studio skills have no bounds. 

Helmut has been releasing since 1997 on labels like Soma, Darkroom Dubs and Sleep Is Commercial and wrote this new album in Berlin using self built synths, effects and field recordings as well as an array of hardware. The record is inspired by the complete listening experience offered up by Leftfield with their Leftism album during the 1990s and is the first time Helmut has really worked solo. 

“It’s a story about a journey into my deepest pain and deepest joy. So the album is about opposites… dark and light, depressing and uplifting, slow and fast, old and new, warm and cold, sad and happy, healthy and destroyed, personal and transpersonal.” says Ebritsch. 

The fourteen track album is a mind-expanding journey from start to finish that really takes the listener on a sonic ride through a series of different worlds. It is multi-layered and expertly produced so as to have maximum impact. 

‘Souls Transmitting’ opens with the stirring ambiance of ‘Melodies of Power’, immediately transporting you into a cerebral sphere miles away from here. From there it perfectly ebbs and flows through kinetic tech house, downbeat urban experimentation and serene sound worlds that place you right at their centre. 

The title track is hugely arresting with its groaning synths, shadowy voices and Vangelis style futurism. Elsewhere tracks like ‘Emerging’ make for killer dubbed out grooves whilst ‘Flamingo Park’ is an excursion in beat-less sonic beauty. 

Souls Transmitting is a perfectly programmed and seductively sequenced ride from start to finish. It takes you up and down in some style and is surely Helmut Ebritsch’s finest work to date as a result.

Just like bacon, the latest release by French producer IFF (“I’m from Finland”), is a delectable and fascinating phenomenon – an entity which will also predictably make its way around the internet soon. 
Lest you think of “The Bacon Escape” as yet another banal troll (though it is definitely inspired by), there is a interesting and well-thought reasoning for the titled album, one that is symbiotic to his reason for music (each track has ‘bacon’ in its title). 
In essence, music is to be as accessible, and enjoyed, as bacon.
“Music is universal, Bacon sure seems to be as well, so that’s what went on in my head when I wrote this piece.”
Now its gotten into ours – this 4 track EP with two additional remixes by rising producers Kayloo and Suede has a finesse, which grows on you. It has all the ingredients for easy listening – synth lines, bass swells and tight syncopation. 
As he puts it himself - " I make music for the soul, but if you don’t feel like you have one, it’s okay… You got ears". Now dig in some hearty soul grub, “The Bacon Escape”.

We are proud to be premiering this on the excellent HillyDilly platform, which has always showed a lot of love and support for what we do. Big shouts!
