For the 29th Schmaus entry we are delighted to receive Yoske (LARK), from Nagoya, Japan. Yoske started his musical career in 1996 as a Hip-Hop DJ. Eager to broaden his musical spectrum, he travelled to Europe in 2002 and moved to Berlin in 2012 to focus on his current style. There he performed at infamous venues such as Club der visionaere, Hoppetosse and Tresor Grobus. 
On the production side, Yoske released “Magic EP” on LARK vinyl, a modular based concept piece, among several releases on different labels. Since 2009 the artist is also hosting the “LARK” parties in Osaka and Nagoya (JP), bringing guest artists from Europe.

Yoske opens his performance with intriguing abstract noises that slowly turn into a solid groove. A lively hi-hat with an acoustic feel leads the dance over trimmed sounds. Delicious textures and tones complement time stretched elements, giving life to a super organic and stripped-down machine.
Hints of vocals pop here and there, whether it’s movie dialogue cuts or down pitched whispers. At some point, the artist achieves mind blowing harmony while remaining atonal, contrasting later with tasty synth cacophony.
All along the performance, there is warmth amongst the dark flavor of the selection, but don’t get me wrong, it gets scary at times! 
The “musique concrete” hits patchwork result in a timeless and tribal piece.
This 2 hour mind twisting march goes on and on in a pure minimal masterclass, all in an impeccable and seamless mixing. Have a nice trip!

Yela’s upbringing in England exposed him to a rich and vibrant music scene, igniting his passion for electronic music. His tireless digging through vinyl collections in search of abstract and unique tracks has allowed him to curate intriguing sets, in which he is known to explore the interconnectivity between a variety of different genres, tying his selections with elements of a tribalism, intricate percussion and a touch of cinematic flair. Six years ago, Yela returned to his hometown, Antwerp in Belgium where he recently co-founded the musical passion project Oridoo together with Hofmann. Over its first editions Oridoo has featured some promising upcoming local & international DJ’s behind the turntables and aims to deliver authentic electronic musical experiences from the heart.

This particular mix is very close to my heart for a number of reasons. The primary one is of course, Gabriel. The occasion, being the night of my birthday and the bringing together of two generations at the forefront of my world. Choosing Gabriel to open for Craig Richards.

As you know I have a deep rooted belief in “we need to know where we are coming from to know where we are going”. New and old generations intertwining.

Gabriel is a very unique young talent. He manages to have attritibutes that I only see in matured artists after all these years. Expansive musical knowledge, having the suitability and adaptability to the context at play; be it jazz, electronic or funk. One can feel that in the progression. Introduction, middle, end…

Story telling.

In addition to the artistic competence you have an incredible personality, one that has ambition but also remains humble, never confusing it with self-entitlement, rather …. mutual respect, appreciation and gratitude. Evident to that, he has his own party called Local Moves, born at The lion and Lamb, supporting local artists, enhancing exchange and contributing to the scene he is a part of.

The venue he holds that party residency in now Little Portland Street, also where this set was recorded. LPS is an audiophile space in Central London with a Martion Installation. This venue is very dear to my heart because I programme the Thursday nights there since it opened for nearly 3 years now.

After the response from her more downtempo track for our Free Download series we thought it only right to follow up with Xiaolin for a mix for our InSessions series. The Hong Kong native is well-versed in all manner of electronic music spheres, but her penchant lies at the rawer, bleepy end of house music and minimal. As well as these serious club sounds, Xiaolin is also a fine purveyor of more traditional sounds and is a regular face on the Canto Pop scene. 

Recorded live at Mihn Club in Hong Kong, Xiaolin takes control of the atmospheric nightspot from the very beginning of this episode of our mix series. Stripping the action back to the fundamental elements, she injects power moves after power moves into the dancefloor as if priming for tracks that are yet to be introduced. Her unhurried, methodical touch speaks volumes as the next groove and bassline comes thudding into view. While the poppier side of her sound is more carefree, Xiaolin’s mix for our podcast series offers freedom of mind as well as of body.

Sohrab Karimi aka Ahu https://soundcloud.com/ahu_sohrab is a producer born in Tehran, Iran, living in Berlin nowadays. Ahu is one of the few artists who prefer to adopt low profile, with little to almost no information about him, beside his music.

Ahu’s signature sound is almost impossible to capture into words: introspective blue, sometimes with a Giegling feeling, other times with deep & dubby references to the minimal house scene, yet always authentic and promiscuous.

Little do we know about https://soundcloud.com/shahr-farang nor https://soundcloud.com/kolonygorky, Ahu’s record labels and homes for much of his releases. The labels reflect his vision about the electronic music, with ambient soundscapes, experimental concepts and sometimes dancefloor oriented cuts.

Somewhere in 2017 Ahu accepted our invitation to contribute to the Introspections series with a mix built with his own productions. To this date, it remanis one of the most beautiful mixes we’ve ever hosted.
