Michelangelo Galilei's music blends diverse influences of traditional Renaissance practices, the avant-garde Florentine musical scene, as well as from the cosmopolitan courts where he worked in Poland and Germany. He is the only Italian lutenist of his generation whose music incorporates elements of French style brisé (broken-up style). But the most distinguishing feature of his music is its lyrical quality, all of which he assimilated into his own confident and distinctive style which he presented to the world in his Il primo libro d’intavolatura di liuto—Fifty-two pieces presented in the manner of suites, an innovation for the time. 

This album presents five suites and a passemezzo-saltarello pair, in what is believed to be the first American recording.
