John Zorn, inspirado en la obra de William Blake —en un álbum que es uno de los más bellos en varios años—, crea un sonido realmente encantador —brillante y lleno de esperanza— de una manera que nunca pensamos, muchos años atrás, que íbamos a escuchar del saxofonista. A Vision in Blakelight (2012) continúa línea musical argumentativa iniciada dos años atrás con The Goddess. Music for the Ancient of Days (2010), y seguida por In Search of the Miraculous (2010), At the Gates of Paradise (2011) y The Gnostic Preludes. Music of Splendor (2012). Esto cuatro son tan recomendables como del que hablamos.

La música, como ha sido la regla en los últimos años, salvo excepciones, no cuenta con instrumentación propia de John. Ella la deja a cargo de un grupo que cuenta con John Medeski en piano y órgano, Kenny Wollesen en el vibráfono, Carol Emanuel en la armónica, Trevor Dunn en el bajo, Joey Baron en la batería y Cyro Baptista en la percusión.

El sonido es muy cálido y orgánico —una sombra del modo minimalista de Terry Riley, pero más lírico en su amplitud— con una calidad abierta, una floración maravillosa que se descubre desde el principio.

Zorn arregla, compone y conduce la grabación. Los títulos incluyen: "An Island In The Moon", "The Hammer Of Los", "The Prophecy", "Marriage of Heaven & Hell", "Night Thoughts", and "When The Morning Stars Sang Together".

John Zorn: Night Thoughts (A Vision in Blakelight, 2012)

While we cannot see small nanoscopic objects like proteins or other molecules that make up virtually all living matter including our cells, tissues, as well as pathogens such as viruses, our computational algorithm allows us to make its material manifestation audible.  This piece is a musical representation of the amino acid sequence and structure of the spike protein of the pathogen of COVID-19, 2019-nCoV (protein data bank identifier 6VSB [1]). 

MUSICAL DECEIT

A virus’ genome hijacks the host cell’s protein manufacturing machinery, and forces it to replicate the viral genome and produce viral proteins to make new viruses from it.  This musical art teaches us something about the fine line between beauty of life and death as an opposite pole.  As you listen to the protein you will find that the intricate design results in incredibly interesting and actually pleasing, relaxing sounds. This doesn’t really convey the deadly impacts this particularly protein is having on the world. This aspect of the music shows the deceiving nature of the virus, how it hijacks our body to replicate, and hurt us along the way. So, the music is a metaphor for this nature of the virus to deceive the host and exploit it for its own multiplication. 

HOW IT IS DONE: 

What you hear is a multi-layered algorithmic composition featuring both the vibrational spectrum of the entire protein (expressed in sound and rhythmic elements), the sequence and folding of amino acids that compose the virus spike structure, as well as interwoven melodies - forming counterpoint music - reflecting the complex hierarchical intersecting geometry of the protein [2].

This is a mix of folkloric and outer-regional music of Ethiopia, all 45s, records that I feel need to be heard. Less of breakbeats & wah wah and this time more of krar, claps, howling organs and trad melodies. For fans of previous mixes ‘Axum to Addis’ and ‘Addis Sheckla Explosion’.

"Montaña De Oro" is a lost demo tape which will be an exclusive bonus track on the re-release of Baak Heat Shujaa's 2010 debut abum.

Psychedelic Salad Records brings us the 10-year anniversary, double LP gatefold re-release of Blaak Heat Shujaa’s eponymous debut album, which first came out in October 2010. Remastered, this first ever vinyl pressing of the album also contains “Montaña de Oro”, an exclusive lost demo tape from the same era! 

The album was recorded and produced by Scott Reeder (of Kyuss fame) at The Sanctuary, a ranch nestled in the hills at the edge of the Mojave desert. The recordings musically capture the distance traveled by a then all-French lineup, from Paris to the epic valleys of the high desert, with prior stops in the Los Angeles region. The Obelisk called it “Desert reverence from la Ville-Lumière”, highlighting “the fuzz, the jams, the open spaces, the purples and blues and red night skies” while praising the album’s “positively magical” bass tones: “as the kids say, it’s fucking sick”. 

Blaak Heat Shujaa later shortened its name to “Blaak Heat” and went on to release 2 more albums, one EP, and one 7” on the likes of NYC’s TeePee Records and Finland’s Svart Records. With a rotating cast of French and American musicians, the band toured Europe and America before going on a partial hiatus in 2018. Blaak Heat members have played or are currently active with Nebula, Mondo Generator, Spindrift, and Al-Qasar.
