Fascinating! Astronomers of old talked about the 'music of the spheres'.  What we hear on the track is of course an outcome of musical decisions by the researchers, but not invalidated by that.  It would be interesting to hear other viruses put through the exact same process.  I thk that could bring out further insight.  Amused to see this piece classified as 'classical'!

Soothing tempo, sublime harmony. Why this choice of scale, instrumentation? Are the MIDI files available? I wonder how others would reharmonize, reorchestrate, rearrange the same musical form and structure. This is how COVID sounds to MIT researchers. How does it sound to a death metal enthusiast? I would love to hear more variations to reflect the wide variety of experiences we have all had with this same pathogen.

After 30 minutes of listening, it started to feel kind of torturous.

Unsere Nr. 137 kommt dieses Mal von einem geheimnisvollen, aber sehr talentierten Geschichtenerzähler, der mich seit ungefähr zwei Jahren ununterbrochen musikalisch begleitet. Ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut an sein damaliges Set „YALLA“, welches mich komplett in den Bann zog. 

Wir begrüßen in unserer kleinen, aber feinen Reihe den Schweizer DJ und Produzenten 'MF JAEGER', der einen großen Hang für orientalische und sehnsüchtige Melodien, sowie tiefe Bassdrums hat. Wer in den tiefen Weiten des Netz Informationen nach Ihm sucht wird schnell feststellen, dass man eben so gut wie nichts über ihn findet. Verdächtig würde manch einer sagen, dabei hat er absolut nichts zu verbergen. Worum es ihm aber geht ist eindeutig: Die Musik. Und die spricht für sich. Ich persönlich finde seine Herangehensweise phänomenal, schließlich gibt es schon genug Selbstdarsteller in den Weiten des Musikgeschäfts. Dass er trotzdem erfolgreich ist, wundert mich nicht. In seiner Vita fehlen im Grunde nur noch ganz wenige Clubs und Festivals. Vor allem der ein oder andere Berliner sollte ihn als Live-Künstler kennen und zu schätzen gelernt haben. Wir hatten bisher leider noch nicht die Ehre ihn live zu erleben, aber das wird bald nachgeholt werden. Zum Beispiel auf dem kommenden Gardelegen Festival oder aufm Klunkerkranich. Haltet eure Ohren und Augen offen nach ihm. Es lohnt sich.

Eine hervorragende Hörprobe seines Könnens ist das für uns zur Verfügung gestellte Live-Set aus der Bucht und dem Kopfüber Openair diesen Jahres. Eine Premiere im doppelten Sinne. Schließlich ist es das erste live Set in unserer Podcastreihe überhaupt. Und zum Anderen für mf jaeger, da er uns doch eigentlich ein DJ-Set zukommen lassen wollte. Nicht hervorsehbare Umstände waren in diesem Sinne aber Wohl und Übel zugleich. Wir sind dennoch sowas von froh, dass er uns mit diesem einzigartigen Set belohnt.

Das Live-Set ist nämlich kaum an Schönheit zu überbieten. Neben einem sanften und überaus harmonischen Aufbau mit ganz viel Tiefgang, fließen die Übergänge nahezu nur so ineinander, dass man schnell vergisst einem Mix zu lauschen. Ab und dann könnte man auch meinem, dass es sich bei all der Harmonie nämlich um einen Never-Ending-Track handeln könnte. Ganz falsch ist diese Annahme auch nicht. Schließlich sind alle hörbaren Tracks und Field Aufnahmen aus seiner Feder entstanden. Bis auf „Aristata“ sogar noch unreleased. Noch neuer geht kaum.  
Dazu besticht sein Live-Set auch mit dem tollen Arrangement, in dem er das gewisse Feingefühl für Stimmungen zeigt. Egal wie man es wendet und dreht, die Aufnahme nimmt einen tatsächlich ohne Umwege auf eine intensive Reise ins Nirvana und zurück mit. 

Wir sind selber komplett sprachlos von diesem besonderen, unerwarteten Geschenk, welches du uns gemacht hast mf jaeger. Dabei war alles doch ganz anders geplant gewesen... 

Wir danken Dir vielmals für dieses besondere Set. Umwerfend, intensiv und überraschend gut. Wenn Premiere, dann Hier. Chapeu.

3 years of Tepeme. And maybe 10 more will pass and we will keep saying "this is only the beginning".

We are always celebrating music, but this time the joy is accompanied by the 3 year mark. And so we chose Ramona Wouters to take the wheel and guide us in another one of her epic journeys.

We first listened to her in Manquemapu, on the south coast of Chile for Festival Nomade. She was playing a mystical sunrise set with ravishing views of the ocean and the forest. 

One year later, we saw her at Festival Dos Tierras in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and her groovy afternoon set made us fall in love with her taste. She's very talented when it comes to digging, mixing and feeling the audience. So take this as an invitation to let go, relax, flow, dance and feel the proper course of actions take place, as you observe and do.

Ramona’s sound weaves together a tapestry of melodies, textures and beats, reflecting two decades of extensive world travel. Always conscious of the energy of her audience, her sensitivity stems from a love of dancing, and results in an emotive, sensual style that exudes a rich array of feeling. It is Ramona’s way of giving back and getting back to that vital place we all go when the music feels right.

While we cannot see small nanoscopic objects like proteins or other molecules that make up virtually all living matter including our cells, tissues, as well as pathogens such as viruses, our computational algorithm allows us to make its material manifestation audible.  This piece is a musical representation of the amino acid sequence and structure of the spike protein of the pathogen of COVID-19, 2019-nCoV (protein data bank identifier 6VSB [1]). 

MUSICAL DECEIT

A virus’ genome hijacks the host cell’s protein manufacturing machinery, and forces it to replicate the viral genome and produce viral proteins to make new viruses from it.  This musical art teaches us something about the fine line between beauty of life and death as an opposite pole.  As you listen to the protein you will find that the intricate design results in incredibly interesting and actually pleasing, relaxing sounds. This doesn’t really convey the deadly impacts this particularly protein is having on the world. This aspect of the music shows the deceiving nature of the virus, how it hijacks our body to replicate, and hurt us along the way. So, the music is a metaphor for this nature of the virus to deceive the host and exploit it for its own multiplication. 

HOW IT IS DONE: 

What you hear is a multi-layered algorithmic composition featuring both the vibrational spectrum of the entire protein (expressed in sound and rhythmic elements), the sequence and folding of amino acids that compose the virus spike structure, as well as interwoven melodies - forming counterpoint music - reflecting the complex hierarchical intersecting geometry of the protein [2].

Markus J. Buehler is the McAfee Professor of Engineering at MIT, and a composer of experimental, classical and electronic music, with an interest in sonification. Using an approach termed "materiomusic", his artistic work explores the creation of new forms of musical expression - such as those derived from biological materials and living systems - as a means to better understand the underlying science and mathematics. One of his goals is to use musical and sound design as a novel and abstract way to model, optimize and create new forms of matter from the bottom up, and to assess cross-system design relationships. He is also interested in research to explore relationships between classical music, mathematics, and the physical and biological sciences, an in the mapping of models of consciousness across systems. In recent work he has developed a new framework to compose music based on proteins – the basic molecules of all life, as well as other physical phenomena such as fracturing, to explore similarities and differences across species, scales and between philosophical and physical models.
