AutomAte Podcast 030 - Critical Error

Dutch drum & bass imprint Citrus Recordings has been renowned for kick starting the careers of numerous acts in the present day drum & bass scene. After releasing their last LP early 2013 they now push forward an Australian/German combo better known as Rregula & Dementia!

Having made a name for themselves with releases on Icarus Audio, DSCI4 and Full Force they are now properly focused and have been working eagerly on their latest project. This 15 track CD album could very well be the strongest release to date coming from these guys, hence the name ‘Turning Point’.

The full project will be released on two 12’’ pieces of wax and a CD. For the second 12’’ three heavyweights put their mark on the ‘Turning Point’ project creating a pair of superb remixes. Using the original version of ‘Timeline’ Optiv & BTK flip the track into a hefty stepper with a killer build up that can’t be ignored. This one is bound to inflict damage on the dancefloor! On the flip Austrian inhabitant Mefjus steps up with a remix of ‘Doom Loop’ turning it into a stripped back body-moving riddim. Not to be taken lightly.

If there was one thing we'd level at the drum & bass producer Xtrah, its that he fully comprehends the measure of precision and grit necessary to succeed in his chosen field. As this short mixtape, which was made ahead of his appearance in the Metalheadz Platinum hosted Room Three next week (Friday 27th February) shows, he's really struck a balance between the intricacies of those tunes hell bent on oodles of ghost snares and subtlety and the pomp and drive of the more tear out ready, mid range rollers. Honestly he's long been a guy whose tunes have sent computers in our Farringdon HQ into fits of frenzied Skype IMs, but there's something so short and sweet and yet so measured and exciting about the types of tunes he's included in this mix that makes us ache for the club doors to be open.

Ruede Hagelstein and Watergate go hand in hand. Not only is Ruede one of the longest running residents at the club, but he's also the man behind some of the label's most acclaimed music and the curator responsible for lucky number 13 in the illustrious Watergate mix series. With this, it seemed obvious to put Ruede up to his next task: an album. It is with great anticipation and excitement that we bring you the first LP for both, Ruede and Watergate Records, Apophenia. 

Apophenia is the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data, and for Ruede, this is the perfect interpretation to describe his writing process, in which ideas appear from the empty, chaotic darkness. A random chord progression or percussion arrangement opens the door to the imagination where structures appear and begin to take shape. Unlike most of his previous work, Apophenia is not strictly attached to the dance floor, but created to fit just as seamless while listening at home as it is in the club. For over a year, Ruede collected ideas and visualized his plan. It was important not to mimic his earlier work, but to focus on a certain sound. While staying minimalistic yet extremely organic and melodic he has created a timeless long player.

While the LP spans a range of emotions, it is always grounded in Ruede's unparalleled, singular sound. Pair that with some notable features from artists like PillowTalk, Hollis P. Monroe & Overnite, Justin Evans and C.A.R. and you have a plethora of dazzling music. With tracks like "Moon Rabbit", "Life Is A Beach" and "Found A Place" Ruede displays the sound of a night at the club while "Already Undone feat. Pillowtalk" and "Pareidolia" take rides through the deeper, emotional spaces. In the end, "Apophenia" is the perfect display of not just Ruede's artistry, but Watergate's musical vision, which together, create an illustrious and undeniable entity.

Rising Montreal producer @Forrestmusic teams up with Thailand’s @SunjuHargun on this 4-track tech-house workout.

Having racked up releases on 2020Vision, Mobilee, Visionquest, Defected, Vakant, VIVa, and Souvenir to name just a few, Forrest has had a very prolific few years. Collabs with Avatism & Eric Volta, support by tastemakers like Richie Hawtin, Cajmere and Solomun, every indication is that this is an artist set to explode this year. He’s also just launched Amadeus records, and will have his debut album out in 2015. Impressed yet?

Teaming up with Bangkok’s Sunju Hargun sees Forrest at his most club oriented, crafting four expertly produced tech-house tracks perfect for late-night sets at super-clubs the world over. A self-proclaimed 303-addict, LA-native @TheeMikeB turns in this set of raw acid, featuring a collab with Oliver Dollar and remixes by Sage Caswell, Madame and newcomer TRACE7000.

Mike has been involved in underground music since the 90's, a founding member of the legendary Banana Split party with DJ AM and Steve Aoki, Mike has also remixed and produced records with Diplo, Switch, Stretch Armstrong, Sinden, Jesse Rose, Oliver $, Sammy Bananas, Oliver and many more, featured on releases with labels such as Mad Decent, Fool's Gold, Play It Down, Dim Mak and Yoruba.

Lead track Tree House Acid sounds most at home on Turbo, reminiscent of prime Jesper Dahlback. Late At Night featuring Oliver $ is a classic-sounding slice of fat Chicago, while Let Her Back In, takes the narrative into trippier, psycho-loopy territory.

Storming remixes come courtesy of Sage Caswell, who stripped things down to raw techno, new Turbo signing TRACE7000, whose mix is a chunky late-night euro-bomb, and BNR pal Madame who brought in some tough electro power.

Smooth has laid a steady foundation with his Drum & Bass productions of late. Between his work as one half of Telekinesis with releases on labels such as Blackout Music, Eatbrain, and Mainframe – along with his last release on Viper, ‘WTF / Revenge’ which wrapped up 2015 with monstrous noise and support from: Wilkinson, Matrix & Futurebound, Calyx & Teebee, TC, Audio, Metrik, Mob Tactics, and more. Starting of 2016, Smooth’s ‘True Grit EP’ brings plenty more dance floor destruction to continue the Slovenian’s mark in D&B. 

Leading the charge on the EP is ‘True Grit’. With occasional glimpses to the early days of rave, this track is nothing but forward thinking madness. You’ll need bags of energy to keep up with this one as ‘True Grit’ switches, changes and turns and every possible musical turn. Packed to the brim with attitude and balls this one’s not for the faint-hearted.

Next up is ‘Eraser’, which opens with a spacey atmospheric intro, only to get stripped back into a chunky underground banger. Going sparse on the riffs and heavy on the low end, ‘Eraser’ is a perfect draw for the early morning sets to get the crowd jumping. 

Switching gears, ‘Oxygen’ rolls deep with the melodies and high on that feel good liquid vibe. Subtly epic in its own right, ‘Oxygen’ gives us an early peak to the coming summer vibes. It has weight, presence, and the ability to make you tingle all over. 

Rounding off the EP is ‘Tinnitus’, a condition normally associated with the perception of noise or ringing in the eardrums. Smooth’s version is quite the opposite. After a brief intro, the full impact is laid out for all to bear witness, thundering drums and a huge bassline. A peak time dancefloor weapon has definitely been created here.

`Overcast` was the first Trust in Music track of Rregula & Dementia. It was remixed by Misha, a russian-us citizen from Baltimore. Misha was seen as the promising new talent of the 
Neurofunk scene in 2008. He got his admission ticket to the game by demonstrating the world his superb bassline skills in the lifted-music demolition room selection for podcast #007. After having cooperated with his studio partner Dementia (working together on tracks, such as No U-Turn, Overdose, or Lowlife), Misha left the scene without providing any information about the reasons for his sudden disappearance. ‘All Is Lost’ starts the set with the perfect balance of emotional sonic star-gazing and gritty bottom-end welly. With stunning hymn-like vocals from Thomas Oliver and hype-hungry attitude from Youthstar, it’s widely regarded as one of the album’s boldest highlights. Naturally both Memtrix and Telekinesis have stepped up to the massive challenge.

Lifted fave Memtrix goes first. Opening with teases of the original’s euphoric synths, he lets the vocals breath for one second before BANG: utter bassline sickness takes over. Complete sonic bombardment of the senses, there is no mistaking Memtrix’s direction and focus for this prime-time piece of D&B naughtiness. And there’s no mistaking the raw power of Telekinesis’s remix, either… Igniting with piano-primed ‘lighters up’ intro, we’re soon pushed into the deepest end of the darkness pool with Youthstar’s spitfire delivery, a gut-busting halfstep groove and a murder of distorted bass tones. Flipping to full D&B tempo midway, it’s a strident party piece that will stay in your wallet or playlist from now until the 23rd century.

Next up, ‘Dawn Of A Dark Day’: A blazing unity of UK grime and Euro neuro, the day Black Sun Empire called up the Foreign Beggars for mic-duties was a game-changing day for the entire bass industry. Naturally both remixes pay respect to the fusion and fire of the original. Prolix takes the original’s swaggering halfstep intro and adds a touch more menace on the low-end and an industrial punch to the beats before dropping into a rampant, rolling speaker-smasher. No face will be left unmelted when you drop this. We guarantee it. Meanwhile Receptor adds his own interpretation with an instant uptempo kickstart and the creative use of drama-drenched cinematic strings and devilish Slayer-level guitars.

‘Killing The Light’ brings us to a fitting climax with two of drum & bass most distinctive, forward-thinking acts on remix duties. Delicately dressed with the heart-melting vocals of Inne Eysermans, the raw emotion makes ‘Killing The Light’ the closest thing to a ballad Black Sun Empire will ever write. Paying respect to this, Icicle sharpens the kicks and snares, weaves haunting pads into the mix and takes the vocal to the darkest place imaginable.
